I have a Pentax Optio WP which I like a lot. Digital, 5 mega pixels. Point and shoot. Fully auto. 3X zoom. Excellent Macro.Easy to use and fast. Not a battery
hog. A 256MB chip will hold about 140 images when the resolution is set "mid-range" which means 8 x 10" images with no distortion. Fits in your
shirt pocket. Best feature is that it is WATERPROOF. Not splash proof, waterproof. Immersable to about 1.5 meters. When traveling I protect it with a Pelican
1020 Micro case. These cases are water and dust proof with interior foam padding and cost about $10 so they are great cheap insurance. This camera has all the
bells and whistles but is simple enough to use that even a technology Luddite like me can handle it. It was less that $300 when I bought it 3-4 years ago.
Best, Bill Lambot

My wife and I each use super-zoom point-and-shoots with which we have been extremely pleased. Mine is a Panasonic DMC-FZ7 (6 Mp) with 12X optical zoom Leica
lens and excellent macro capabilities. My wife uses a Kodak Z712 IS (7 Mp) also with 12X optical zoom. We have not experimented with the macro capabilities of
the Kodak. Specific advantages (for us) of both cameras are the presence of an electronic optical viewfinder in addition to the LCD viewfinder screen (a major
advantage in bright light situations) and optical image stabilization (a must with super-zoom cameras). For fishing pics, I also carry a cheap Kodak 3 Mp with
3X optical zoom in a ziploc plastic bag in a pocket of my fishing vest. After soaking one digicam a few years ago, I'll never go into the stream with a
good camera.
Battery life on both the super-zooms is excellent. The Panasonic has a custom battery, and I have a fully charged backup available all the time. The Kodak takes a Kodak battery for maximum use, but will also function just fine on generally available Lithium AAs. Both have 1 gigabyte super fast SD cards the capacity of which we have never really tested since we download within a day or so after taking pictures. Neither of us has ever felt the need to pay the price for a fully waterproof camera when for the same cost we could purchase a more fully featured camera. Hope this helps. Oh, the current model of the Panasonic now has an 18X Leica lens. Either camera is available for less than $300. I think I've seen the Kodak for $219. EP |

I use the Olympus SW. Mine is an older "SW725" model. They now have upgraded it to the "SW1030."
These cameras are very compact and very light. They are also very very tough. SW stands for shock and waterproof. The 1030 model is waterproof to 33 feet, and is designed to survive being dropped from 6 feet. It is also designed to function in low temperatures (provided you keep the battery warm.) It has a 3x optical zoom. Price is $323 http://www.amazon.com/Oly...ics&qid=1222048040&sr=8-4 If you want to spend a little less money, you can get last year's model, the "SW850" for $242 http://www.amazon.com/Oly...ics&qid=1222048040&sr=8-3 It is waterproof down to 10 feet. I've been using my SW for years. I bought it specifically for fly fishing, as I wanted a camera I could get wet and not worry about. It has not disappointed me. Picture quality is very good, almost on par with my much more expensive Ricoh GR Digital II, which is one of the best pocket digital cameras you can buy. The only way you are going to find substantially better picture quality in a point and shoot digital camera is to get a Sigma DP1. At this point in time, image quality is limited by the sensor, and the only point and shoot camera with a large (SLR type) sensor is the DP1. However, the Sigma is substantially larger, not waterproof, and has a very slow refresh rate. |

My wife and each have a Canon PowerShot - hers was about $275 new and mine was $110 on the auction website. Both have macro and telephoto. I carry mine in a
small freezer ZipLoc in my fishing bag. Even though I have a hundred into the camera, if something happened to it, my loss would be less tahn a new camera. I
really like the little PowerShot cameras.

I'll second the Olympus SW series. I bought the camera specifically because of it's ruggedness. I have droppped it, I have left it in the car in
August, I have dipped it into too much water to remember, carried it in rains that would make Noah run for cover and have even taken a bad spill directly onto
the camera in 2 feet of water. It is practically indestructable. Takes great pictures too.
My only real complaint is that it has no peephole. It is entirely screen use. Fine in normal circumstances but a little more difficult in bright sunlight. It also takes a little getting used too for picture taking. Holding the camera at arms length makes for some blurry shots til you get used to it. |

I have f31fd and when I can't take my SLR, this is what I take. What set this apart is it's manual control capacity. You can control shutter speed and
aperture.
I also think the color balance is pretty good, never really need to use photoshop after the shoot. Only down size is the focus speed when in macro mode. However, lack of shutter lag totally make up for it. I got it for $230 last year but for some crazy reason, they now charge double. I tried to get another one as a backup but when the price went over 400 on ebay, I gave up. Here's really long online review, 18 pages!, http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/fujifilmf31fd/ |

Another vote for the Optio W30 ......the only thing it doesn't do as well as other digital point & shoots that I've owned is take low light indoors
photos. Unless using a tripod it can be slow to focus in those situations, but indoor shots is not why you'd buy a W30 anyway

Pentax Optio T10 | #12 | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

I have the Pentax Optio T10 and have problems with macro shots and seeing the image on bright days. Would the W30 or other Pentax Optio models work better for
very close up pictures and outside? As you can probably tell, I know squat about cameras. Any help is appreciated. Gary.

Gary, I use the W30 and don't have trouble on briht days. As far as the macro goes, I have a Canon S80 that has a much better macro function. The
Pentax does not allow me to focus close to the lens.
I use the S80 for everything away from the water, and take the W30 when there could be a dunking in my future.

My Olympus SW has been in the drink twice...once while in my shirt pocket and a second time just dropped in the yakima River. Still works like a champ.

I must agree with Seattlesetters 100%!!! The Olympus SW's are my choice and what I use to take all my photo's via web or outdoors! The SUV of cameras
and if there ever was a camera made for fly fishing this is it! Underwater shots, dunking bring it on, Low light situation, Falls, takes a licking and keeps on
ticking

A vote for the Pentax Optio M20 - if you do not need the waterproofing it is a 7Mb (apparently idiot proof - so far anyway) point and click and is heavily
discounted at the moment.

Public Service announcement: though I am partial to the Pentax models, I saw this very good deal on the Olympus 1050sw for $172 with
2gb card from newegg through 11/25. I have no affiliation with newegg, but I have purchased from them with no problems in the past.
