This configuration rod isn't very common. Are there any good tapers, either older or newer, that have proven good to fish with. I like the size because
it packs well and seems to be a bit lighter than an 8ft and yet has extra length over a 7 1/2ft for bigger water, while short enough in tighter situations,
too.
Thanks, Rich |

Rich, I don't have one to offer you, but I also will be very interested in replies to this thread. This configuration will be my next rod, if I can find a
great taper for it! Wishing you and me luck!

I had the opportunity to cast Chris Carlin's 7'9" FTS 3/2 5 wt this spring. That is a very nice rod.

I am currently working on a 7'-9" 3/2 4 wt based on a Payne taper. I will let you know how it comes out if you are interested.

Gubster,
I made a mistake. The rod that I am currently working on is based on a Thomas taper, not Payne. The original taper was designed as an 8" three piece. My bamboo gurus make it as a two piece. I thought that I would try it a little shorter. I'm hoping that it is going to be a great small stream rod. |

I started this thread in hopes of finding some "starting places" for this configuration. In fact I've come up with a taper myself which is
based off a couple Rick Robbins rods I have, none of which are that length, and also taper ideas from the Marinaro book. So I guess since there aren't any
tapers coming forth I will go forward with what I have and report how it turns out when finished.

Jack Howells book (the lovely reed) has a taper in it for a 7'-8" Gillum 3pc which uses step down ferrules.
Adding one inch to that taper should not be a problem as it is only 1/3 of an inch on each section I modified (stretched) a Payne 198 to 7'-9" (two different rods) and they both turned out to be real sweet casting 5wt's that incorporate Super Z ferrules. JohnR |

Don makes this in hex and quad. Based on personal experience with the quad, I strongly encourage you to consider it.

I've got a Dennis Stone (tapermaker) 7'9" 3/2 5wt and its really sweet. A real "do-everything" rod.
I've also heard that Dennis makes a 5-piece 7'9" 5wt that casts brilliantly. |

I have a Brooks - Payne Para 79 that is a great rod. I like a parabolic rod and this rod can be used short and delicate or throw the whole fly line. Its a
great DF rod and has be nothing less that spectacular on the water.
It will handle a big fish or protect your 7x tippet. You don't read much about Paynes Para series of rods, but I have noticed them selling for big dollars over the years. I think there are so few of them out there and so few people have had a chance to use them, you don't read a lot about there performance on the water. There is the Garrison 206. Walt Powell made a 79 that cast like a dream. There was a Thomas 79 Parabolic as well. A two of the most famous were the Pezon et Michel PPP and the Parabolic Royale. Even Leonard made a few 79's there was the duracane and also a multi pc. (6) I think, packrod. Walt Carpenter did a 79 6wt that was a Browntone. Alan
