As for me, after 35+ years of fly fishing I only recently "discovered" the delights of classic parabolic rods. Keep in mind, this comes from someone who previously preferred relatively "fast" tapers.
But now, I regularly fish three Young clones (Para 14, Perfectionist and Driggs tapers) and a Gene Edwards 7' 10" "Para Taper" made for Charles Daly. I like'em all...a lot. But, take it from me, I've had no trouble making the transition. My casting style adapted readily to the parabolic rods.
And frankly, but perhaps ironically, I now also find many of my Orvis rods display the same casting characteristics as the Young designs. Go figure!
In short my experience has paralleled that described in TJ's original post. Years ago I had a fly fishing friend, many years my senior, who was a personal friend and good customer of Paul Young. He raved about PHY's rods and worshipped his early Para 15. My friend passed away some time back, but all I can say to him today is, "Mick...now I get it!"
Your Black Hills pal,
Scott
