Albino squirrel? |
Lead | ||

While getting out of the Gallatin River I started to climb the bank and what thought was a white rabbit about 10' away turned out be a white squirrel? Have
you seen one? I was mortified and couldn't believe it.

We have a white squirrel living in our neighborhood. He/she is beautiful. Not an albino though as its eyes are brown.

Both albinism and melanism (fully pigmented, fur is black in appearance) are well documented and fairly common in squirrels. It occurs in the wild in various
squirrel species, but there literally are colonies of albino Eastern gray squirrels in cities across the USA. Living in the relatively protected habitat of
city parks, albino squirrels are less subject to predation and more likely to survive into adulthood and pass on their genes. Olney, Illinois celebrates its
white squirrel population, thus generating tourism revenue: among many web sites, see http://www.ci.olney.il.us/Visitors/WhiteSquirrel.htm
Quashnet's Paul H. Young Rod Database has photos and descriptions of over
340 PHY Co. rods, plus catalogs, accessories, etc. Thank you to all
who continue to send me PHY rod photos and info.

Yep, the town I grew up in has a large population of red fox squirrels and there was always a white one or two around the city's parks.
They were also kind of a tourist attraction as I recall. Flyman

Dennis, If you were mortified over that white squirrel, just think how flabbergasted you would've been if you had seen the Great White Buffalo that Ted
Nugent immortalised in one of his songs from many years ago

I have it on reliable report that General GoFish's fly dresser is breeding these critters to simplify the processes needed to tie bead-head Pink Squirrels.

I've seen an albino grey squirrel here in south Florida, so I guess you're liable to find them just about anywhere. The way hawks chase squirrels here,
I would think that a white squirrel would have to extra careful, because he's sure easily seen in the woods. I still have to stop and stare when I see a
squirrel run up a palm tree...I'm from Tennessee, and it still seems odd to find them in anthing but an oak or hickory.
Fine flyrods can be made from different materials, but bamboo is the Benchmark against which all the rest are compared......

I was at a new construction site a couple of years ago and the Project Manager, Electrical, pulled out some photos of a snow white squirrel.
Can't remember if it was a true albino. He proceeded with the photo show by stating, here he is on our deck, here he is in the flower bed, here he is in the pines, here he is at the bird bath, and here he is after I shot him! What!!!!!!!!!! True story. Bob

A few years back we had a true albino (pink eyes) squirrel flitting about our Central PA cabin. He was around for about two years, which truly surprised us
since he was visible from a hundred yards away in any cover. We figured a hawk or owl would get him pretty quick. Had a white deer up there once as well.
And just to provide the other side of the spectrum, after the catskill gathering I spent a couple days fishing the Willow and Beaverkill. On Wednesday as I was preparing to leave at the powerstation parking lot I saw an absolutely BLACK squirrel, truly melanistic, this squirrel was a deeper darker black than the blackest black lab I have ever seen. I've seen "black" squirrels before but never anything that came close to the midnight black coloration of this guy. |

There is a town in the Missouri Ozarks where virtually all the squirrels are albino. Near Crane Creek which used to be one of my favorite fishing holes.
