Dan Dog,
It is a very interesting film. I bought it some months ago and have watched it at least twice. As a document it is unique. Johan

Hi Dan Dog, It's a buy. I had to send across the pond to do it but it's well worth it. There's nothing else like it. It's very relevant to
the job export problems in many industrial countries. And you get to see lots of tackle and 'meet' lots of Hardy Brothers employees. You'll love
it. I do. Jay Edwards

It's a terrific film -- full of wonderful old photos and film clips, reminiscences of former employees and discussions about how the company got into the
situation it is in now. Sad, infuriating in some ways, but very well done and instructive. There are fewer rods and reels than I would have preferred, but it
was aimed at a broader audience.

I saw it at the Mid Atlantic Gathering. Fellow board member Spruce Grouse had a copy.
I really liked some of the old film clips included. I definitely intend to purchase a copy. Bob |

Everyone should watch it . . those who haven't should add it to their Christmas list.
It was favourably reviewed on this forum back in March. The Producers web site Brian |

OK I was still a little unsure what to expect thinking, "hey it's just a film about a fishing tackle company". But I was blown away. This is one
of the best documentary films I have ever seen. Not just because of the subject, but its a story about a 135 year love affair with angling, and a film about
people besotted with what they did; making the best fishing tackle in the world. The archive clips really capture this incredible world now sadly lost to us.
The Hardy's are great inventors and showmen too, they seem to thrive. But all the while the world is changing around them; World Wars and fought and won,
the British lose their Empire, but still deep at the heart of it all, is a passion to fish and the need to be the very best lives on, albeit with unbelievable
ups and downs. The spirit of fishing behind this film is what makes it really stand out, the dedication and workmanship of master craftsman of days gone, as
well as those struggling to survive in our modern day. I guess the U.S. and the British are pretty similar in how they happily discard things of value in their
recent pasts. I think it's 'hats off' to the filmmakers for rescuing so beautifully and fascinating a part of our angling history, one perhaps soon
lost forever.
The film-making by the way is beautiful. If I saw this on the big screen I'd go away a happy man. The photography is lush, the editing poetic and it knows when to savor the moment. And the music, it strikes this wonderful balance between beauty and melancholy and if I could buy the soundtrack I would. Apparently in the early days of Rolls Royce, their advertisements would show their cars parked up outside the Hardy's shop in London. Hardy's was the brand they wanted to aspire to and in turn Hardy's became know as the Rolls Royce of fishing tackle. I'd say this film is the Rolls Royce of fishing films. "Only the best is good enough for fisherman", claimed J.J. Hardy in the 1890s, well this film exceeds the claim. In my opinion it's essential hour and a half of armchair angling for anyone who appreciates the best. So, in short, Glad I bought it!!! |
