Never broke a tip on a bamboo rod in 54 years of fishing. So if it ever happens, I won't be too upset.

Fished the Little Juniata last weekend and also Spruce Creek, the G. Harvey section. When I first got on the water and began to work out some line the butt
section of my Orvis 9-6", TLS shattered - discontinued model and no warranty on rods bought at their warehouse sales. I had two other rods in the car so I
used another without incident. The following day I fished Spruce Creek (lots of overhanging hemlocks - lovely). I was stringing up an Orvis 4wt and was
disappointed to discover that I ran out of pole before I got to the tip top (broken tip). I realized that I must have broken the tip on an earlier trip to the
Potomac (no longer admitting how I abused my flyrod and line that day). totally unrelated note: telescoping, aluminum ("alunimum"), fruit pickers
can be purchased for $49.95.

Fourth or fifth day of a marathon fishing week in Pennsylvania; 24 hour drive to the area then up at 5 am. each day and fish nonstop until 9 pm. followed by
late supper and lying session(with beverages) then to bed at 1 or 2 am.---Repeat---
Got on the water at Young Woman Creek at sunrise with a new 7' 2wgt mounted with an older Hardy Flyweight. By noon the temperature had risen into the mid-nineties. Standing in ankle deep water with the rod tucked under my arm while changing a fly when I dropped the rod. The reel struck a rock I was standing next to. Resulted in a badly bent frame, beyond field repair. Had about 20 feet of line plus the leader stripped off the reel when this occurred. Spool would still turn in the frame but only with great effort. Struggled to rewind flyline onto the spool, rod tip bouncing as I did so. Loop of line wrapped the tip while I was focusing on the reel. Crank, crank, crank, SNAP! 2/2 rod now a 2/1. Reel a goner as well. Not a happy day and the only consolation was that my usual stupidity was probably enhanced by fatigue, heat and dehydration. Ken |

"Fewer bamboo classics are broken while angling than while being assembled or broken down." Classic & Antique Fly Fishing Tackle A Guide for Collectors & Anglers, A. J Campbell.
I was hiking with a lined rod and getting hung up so I decided to break down the rod without removing the
tippet and fly. First mistake - the fly was secured at the tip top rather than the hook keeper. I stripped out two feet of tippet from the tip top then
struggled to separate the ferrules. In a split second the sections separated more than two feet and the tip snapped
about 4" down. Apparently, the fly got fouled up on the tip top To this day I can't figure out why the reel
didn't release more line.

Ken, Read your entire post...that sounds brutal. Brutal!! Even that fishing. Still, the memories. The good times...It was much easier when I was in my "twennies"....
Been there/done that w/o the rod damage though. You described it very well. Jeremy. |

The only time I've ever broken rods was while fishing. I had an old Monty that the tip just snapped right above the ferrule as I went into a cast on the
water and I had a W&M tip just shear off at a guide while casting. I've divested myself of all my old rods (not my new bamboo though), partly for that
reason and partly because I just haven't been fly fishing much lately. Most of my fishing involves taking my 9 year-old-son out to a pond where he spin
fishes for bream and bass. In another year or so I'm going to try and wean him over to the "dark" side of FF. I tried once already, but he said
he much preferred to spin fish and I know better than to push too hard. He'll want to try it sooner or later.

I am probably jinxing myself by mentioning this but to date I have never broken a rod or rod tip, bamboo, 'glass, graphite, fly or otherwise, at any time
in my life. Rest assured tonight I will ask God to forgive me for so stating and pray He allows me to continue with His blessing. An' I ain't that
careful!!!!!!

Happened for the first time to me this past Friday on the Ruby River. Fished all week (Rock Creek, BeaverHead and Ruby) without a problem. Landing the last
fish of the last day, heard a strange sound, and 7" of tip slid down the line. Clean break, so I'm thinking it was a result of a beadhead or splitshot
ding.

While fishing the Farmington two years ago I noticed my tip was about 30yards down stream tailing my fly. The Tonka Prince I was flailing broke below the
female ferrule via disintegration (powder). Over the winter it was repaired for last season and things were going well until one day... when I decided not to
dissemble my rod because the next hole on the Westfield was a minutes drive away. The nasty combination of needing A/C and the tip slipping out the window
resulted in the classic French Revolutionization of the Prince's head.

Circa 1984; my first "nice" graphite rod; an original generation Sage (GFL686?). Fly got stuck in a tree; doing the right thing, or so I thought, I
set the rod down under the tree and reach up by hand to pull the branch down enough to retrieve my fly. Instead, the whole damn dead limb came down and landed
on my precious fly rod, smashing the butt section into a maze of plastic fibers. Money was especially tight at the time, so I was heartbroken. After replacing
the butt section, I sold the rod because it bothered me that the colors of the two sections were now mismatched. Wish I still had that rod for old time
sake....

Yea, many years ago after fishing, back at my truck in the dark I pulled the rod tube out and placed what I thought was the bottom of the tube on the ground.
As soon as I did I realized it was the top and I had left the cap off. To late snapped the tip on my Leonard 38. Went home the next day and called Bob Taylor and had him build a new tip. Bob G. |

Regrettably, three tips and one mid. The mid snapped off clean as a whistle right at the male ferrule while roll casting, almost as if it had been sawed. It
was a mint H-I Canada Creek. My friend, Andy Gross who is a rod maker, did a postmortem and concluded the bamboo simply did not have enough power fibers to
sustain the stress of my repeated roll casts to get more distance. So much for H-I's as far as I'm concerned (except for Princes and Queens). One of
the tips came apart (delamination) while casting. It was an Orvis 8' Battenkill. Sent it back to Orvis and they replaced the entire rod. The other two tips
broke because of my stupidity
. I won't explain. I dumped the
problem into Jeff Fultz's lap. At least my #10 7 1/2 Heddon is back in action.

even fish the rod, and it caught on a knot and callapsed the tip, ie like a wet broken limb, i knew then i was a complete idot, oh well i got a new tip from
reams, nice job, great rod and now i have three tips. go figure d

Though, had the female ferrule pull straight off a Granger while breaking it down. Fortunately, had already landed my one fish of the day - but, worth the casting time 3 weeks ago - an 18" brown. I've had a tip on graphite snap, I believe after having been pre-stressed formerly by a beadhead hit. And twice had graphite ferrules crack, once on a backcast while casting a weighted bugger. Cy |
