Can someone please tell me, is SB 359 8 1\2ft. a 5 or 6 wt.? Just picked up an addition to my blue collar cane collection. What do you suggest as a starting
point. I will try different lines when it arrives but thought I would see what anyone here thought!! THANKYOU!

I think mine is a solid 5wt. I use a WF Rio Selective Trout II. Its a good match. A better match than any other line I had tried with it.

I have 2 (actually they are 346's, but it's the same taper). Both are 6's. Interestingly, the action bears very little resemblance to my 9-foot
South Bend 6's.

I disagree, an 8-1/2' 359 is a 5-wt. It's a hair faster than an 8-1/2' 323, but I fish mine with a WF5 and DT5.
and just to dress up this thread...

Thanks again for the reply's. I just got mine today. It was a great price but one short tip about 2 inches. Think it will mess up the taper too much or
will it be OK? Are tips hard to find for these rods? The other tip is fine and rod is really nice.
bulldog that is awesome looking!! Is that reel the same size as 1494 or 1495 Medalist? Thanks again, WLYBGR. |

I sold the Ultimate SB Combo on the board here a couple of years ago to finance my DR Stone FE Thomas Light Special.
I am not at all disappointed with making the sale, it's just one of those choices. The sale lasted all of 14 minutes. The reel is a SB1185, which is a 3-5/8" narrow Shakespeare perfect (equivalent to 1900 Steelhead/Trout reel). Very rare - I've only seen two, and this was the best of those.

South Bend 8 1/2' Tapers | #11 | ||
|
South Bend had more than 1 taper in their 8 1/2' 3XX series. On the 346 & 323 the rods are
marked as to line size on the 359(or any of the 59 series) their not marked. On the rods marked E or HEH the mid-tip ferrule is a 10/64 on the rods marked for
a D the mid-tip ferrule is a 11/64. thats why some are a 5wt. and some are a 6wt.

South Bend identified their tapers as DF, T and B, Dry Fly, Trout, and Bass
The DF rods, 323, 346, 359, 358, 290 are generally all 5-wts.; although, the 9'ers may cast better with a 6, as well as the 7-1/2' 290. Personal preference, etc. The T or wet-fly rods, 23, 46, 177, 159, are all 6-wts. etc. The B or bass rods, 24, 47, 59, 77, 29, 58, 55, 56 are all 7-wts. etc.

Hmmmm....I have an incredible SB 323, 3-2 and it did not like my 5 wt., DT Thebault silk line at all. It casts wonderfully with a WF 6wt. Cortland Sylk WF
line. Maybe I oughta try a 5 wt. WFF line.

burneyflyfish has it dead on. I have two 8.5' 359 project rods. I was going to scavange parts off of one to fix another, but found that the two tips were
different sizes at the ferrule. Had to go looking for another rod that had the right size tip (the smaller 5 wt tip), which I did eventually find on eBay.
Now I just have to find time to finish fixing it.

I've noticed the older 359s with the yellow reel seat have the smaller ferrules compared to the newer ones with the brown reel seat.
