Well, it's a gorgeous Fall day in Vermont and I was feeling the need to cast some of my old sweethearts before the snow falls. A few weeks ago I won a
nice 1494 round LG and I was pleasantly surprised when it arrived with a really decent silk line on it. The line cleaned up really well and today was the
first time I got to try it. I pulled out 2 of my oldest, friendliest rods, a Hawes and a Halstead both 8'6" 5 weights. I love both of these rods and
have cast them very happily with any number of synthetic lines. But, the first time I put the silk line on them I practically swooned. What an amazing
feeling. It almost felt like the rods were casting themselves. My son came over to see what all the fuss was about and the same thing happened to him - and
this from a graphite lover who thinks his dad is a little eccentric. For those of you who already love cane but have not had the pleasure of combining it
with silk, do give it a try. Seems like they were made for each other.

As a Halstead devotee (see my article in the AMFF Winter 2008 issue) I agree that the 8 1/2 ft. 3 piece Halstead 5W is a great rod.
Reminds me of my Payne 204L which I have always liked better with 5W than 4W line. I also have a nice 8 1/2 ft. 2 piece 6W Halstead, not nearly as delicate as the aforementioned 5W rod. I have never tried any of my Halsteads with silk line. I am now on a mission. Thanks for the tip. J |

You are so right. About ten days ago, departing from the real world, I fished an 8 1/2 ft 3 piece F.E. Thomas, with intermediates, and a DT5 silk line on an old farlow reel for brook trout in northern Vermont. The fish were all colored up, beyond anything real and the day was perfect. The copper-orange color of the fish is hard to describe, but some of the leaves this time of year are the closest I can get. It was perfect. Charlie

What water were you on Charlie? I have poking around Lewis Creek and the NewHaven. I agree with you, those fish against a background of Vermont foliage defy
description in mere words.
