Repair of my Orvis CFO III HELP |
Lead | |||||
|
I have a Hardy made CFO III that is in pretty good condition save the handle screw has stripped out and with no threads I am at a loss on what to do to repair
this. I know I could send this to Bill Archuletta but I don't really want to spend the money to send it over if there is something that I could do myself
to fix it. Any suggestions??
Thanks Seabass

You could seat it in JBWeld.
clean all the surfaces with denatured alcohol and allow them to dry completely. Make sure you you apply the bead of JB Weld so the knob won't get any. The choice to make it even cleaner would be to lay the thinnest bead of JB Weld inside the spool hole, let it cure completely and re-tap the thread, but that requires the correct tap.
the rods are never obsolete - the marketing is.

You might consider "Form-a-thread", sells for about $10 at our local Ace hardware. Do a Google search for form a thread for more information (sorry
but I can't seem to cut and paste a link) -- similar to JB Weld but it comes with a release agent. While I have no first hand experience I know several
people on automotive forums who have had good success with it.

Try the Orvis Reel Repair Shop in Vermont. Used to have a reel tune-up service too for about $20

Form a gasket will work..assuming there is a little bit of threat left in the female alu tap hole.....but must say would never feel 100 percent comfortable
with the strength of that repair ....a reel handle knob is a place of stress....tapping a hard SS screw into soft alu at a point of great stress never made
much machining sense to me..
there are various other ways for a better repair..but they all require machine tools... a new shoulder screw could be made..a lot of work ..and the dia of the hole would need to expand..therefore lessening the bite at the sides think if it were me,,I would either cut off the thread on the screw and drill and retap the base or discard it all together...but in the end..use the stripped hole for a screw (probably a hex screw that had been formed down so as not to interfere with the spool ) that could be inserted from the inside back into the shoulder screw or it's repacement spindle... |

If it were mine, I'd use this stuff to fix it: CLICK BOND CB200 ACRYLIC ADHESIVE
Aircraft Spruce sells it.
http://www.aircraftspruce...alog/hapages/04-06040.php We used it all the time to glue airplanes together. (Real airplanes) It's probably 100 times better than the JB stuff. It will last forever. |

I'd just retap the hole with larger threading and have anew pin made.

For repairing damaged threads I have used helicoil with great succes, it's made for
situations like this. It's important you make sure the hole and new tapped threads are perpendicular to the spool so the handle won't wobble but other
then that it's really easy to use.
If you don't have the required taps and don't want to buy the rest of the tools you need a local garage or bicycle store might be able to help you out cheap. |

And I'm sure you'll keep a watch for an inexpensive replacement spool. they come up from time to time. might be less that the cost (time included) of a
repair.

Seabass -
Sounds like you have many good suggestions, but PLEASE note that if you send it off to Orvis for repair, make certain you specify that you want the reel repaired and not replaced
There are a couple guys on the forum that sent old Hardy made CFOs in for repair and got a "brand new" CFO back that ....well.....was NOT made by Hardy's. Just something to be aware of so you didn't end up having an experience that would give you nightmares. Mark B |

Do you have access to taps?
I can make you a new pin with oversized threads easily. Bob |

I have decided to take multiple peoples advice on this problem. I picked up some JB Weld and have re-attached the handle. I think this will hold fine based
on my initial inspection but I will have to wait till I am home in a week to give it a closer look.
I also just picked up another CFO III on yabE which has a couple extra spools and that way I will have two working reels and an extra spool. Thanks for the thought guys. I will let you know how the JB Weld works out. Seabass |
