I recently purchased a travel case from L.L.Bean and they really hit a home run with this one.Heavy canvas and leather,it even looks beter in person than by
the pics. A great value for 60bucks, heck a shirt costs you that much. I liked the old style Orvis but was not able to find one,and I like this one even
better. A 3 piece 8'er will fit ok and they do make a longer one also. You would not be dissapionted with this. Jim

Do you have a link for the travel case? I did not see one on the LL Bean that matched your description.

I've had my pair (small and large) for at least two years. There was a thread here about them a couple of years ago, but I can't find it. I think
they're great. The small one is perfect for 9' 4 piece plastic rods, and the large one is perfect for my Reams 8'3" 2 piece (my smaller 2
piece rods are a bit loose for the elastic loops); there is some play on either end.

I got one of the Bean cases last year when I had to carry a Para 15 out to Colorado for personal delivery (I'm all about service
) along with my rods to fish. Normally I try to take 3-piece rods in my Abel
rod case. The Bean case looks classy but my one complaint is that loaded with a bunch of rods it can be fairly heavy. By their looks and questions it seemed
that most people at the airport thought I was carrying a rifle in it rather than fishing rods.

Do the rod tubes sit loose inside the bag or is there some arrangement to keep them from bumping around? How many tubes can you fit in the 2-piece bag? Thanks,
Lawrence

Lawrence,
The Bean case has sewn-in elastic to securely hold 3 rods, but there's room enough to hold 2-3 more and not have them bounce around. Are we continuing the steelhead fishing after Thanksgiving tradition this year? |

Look at the Abel website. They are discontinuing their luggage line and everything is 50% off. The expedition cases can hold 6 rods and come in 33 and 42
inch lengths. I have 2 33" cases and just ordered a 42" one.

Oops. In the tubes. Or in my case since I'm flying with the thing, in pvc tubes.

Where can you buy commercial PVC tubes, custom length, for fly rods that would fit in the LL Bean bag?

I go to the hardware store and buy 1 1/4" or 1 1/2" PVC pi.pe in the plumbing section to the nearest foot as well as a couple of end caps for each
tube I'll make. At home I hacksaw to the exact length I want. If you can get away with the 1 1/4" diameter it is thinner walled and a fair amount
lighter.

Spruce's suggestion is very good and I should have tried it before I bought commercially
That said, I got some nice and resonably priced cordura-covered pvc tubes
with sponge inserts and zip caps from Mud Hole. They are available in just about any length you need. I leave my original tubes at home and travel with the
pvc ones inside a canvas rod carrier similar to the LL Bean version discussed earlier.

Hello all!
I was tired of my heavy rodtube and decided to find something else, lightweight style.i found a picture on this forum of an old Orvis rod roll.I have made my own version of this item. It is made of a fabric used to make sprayhoods on boats. The tubes is thinwalled electric pvc-tubes. I can transport 3 rods of 8ยด5" three-piece and a spinningrod on my backpack.Tested hard this season and has proved to work ecellent. tight lines! Svante from Sweden
