I am considering buying a Paul Young rod from a friend and would appreciate some opinions about its pricing. It is an 8.5' 2/2 with original tube and
replacement bag and he bought it 7-8 yrs ago from Bob Summers. It has blackened N/S ferrules and guides and a downlocking screw lock reel seat with cork
insert. The butt cap has no markings on it. The flaming is not really dark and blotchy like some PY rods I've seen. The finish and cork are excellent and it doesn't look like it's been fished much but one tip is down
1/2" and has a very slight set. On the bottom section it says 8 1/2" - 4 1/4 oz. HCH and Paul H. Young Detroit. Maker On one tip section it says
15/64 Fer. 4 1/2 /64 tip -- all inking done by hand, not stamped. OK, now here's where it gets a little odd. The one full length tip looks like it was made at a different time than the shorter
one. The goldish untipped silk wraps are done with coarser thread and the color is close, but not a perfect match to the silk on the other tip and the butt. It
also has no inked writing on it like the other tip section. The ferrule looks identical to the one on the other tip. The tip with the writing is the original I
think (its the one that's 1/2" shorter) and it makes the rod about a 5wt. The unmarked tip is visibly a bit thicker and makes the rod a 6wt. I assume
that since Bob S. sold this rod as a Young, the extra (or replacement) tip was made by Young, Summers himself or one of the others that worked for the Young
Rod Co. How much does the fact that one tip is a replacement and lacks inking affect the value of this rod? The current owner thinks that because of the way it is signed, this rod predated the PY Rod Co. and was made by Young himself perhaps in the 40's
or early 50's. I don't have photos (but could get some) but doubt that the subtle differences I have described would show. Any opinions about its
dollar value? Thanks much!
