#6 White-winged Butterfly on a Medway Iron. I would honestly give at least a finger on each hand to include a second fly,, a standard rabbit-strip black
leetch. These really are all i need.
Roll-cast,, David beat you to it on the last page

Probably a Sawyer's Grey Goose or a Sawyer's PTN Either/or. Both great flies for me.

I met a guy salmon fishing the Margaree two week-ends ago, with two swing leaf boxes filled with GP's (I think they were 1612 Wheatley's).
Orange, Blue, Red, Yellow, Green, Purple and Black in three sizes, but each and every one of them was a GP. Imagine flying out from Sweden to Cape Breton, NS with one fly pattern. This fellow told me he has fished the world - Russia to Argentina with only GP's and has done really well so he doesn't have to waste time and money chasing material. Sure enough I am fishing another region of Nova Scotia for the last three days and guess the only fly working. I wonder if I have met the prophet of a new cult. |

Col. Esmond Drurys incredibly effective prawn imitation. I prefer it in black but that is just me. I don't have a link available for you to see it but
perhaps a google search. There is actually a group called the Order of the Black GP out on the west coast! I have a thread in the art/painting page here and
the last batch of photos i posted were motly hooked on a #2 Black GP.
It is a time consuming fly but well worth the effort. Persaud. I met a lad in Margaree in '98 that only fished the Blue Charm and his numbers for the week we were up were every bit as strong as ours. I also know an ex-conservation officer here on the Island that fishes the black bear-green butt almost exclusively and he is right up there amongst us regulars. I have narrowed it to 5 or 6 patterns but don't know if i could do just one for a season. Actually i could but wont! Just did a google search,, here is a link to one http://www.flyfishingconn...115/General+Practitioner/ Hardy Guy

One fly? For what purpose? | #48 | ||
|
The question is very non-specific. The one-fly to spend a day casting would be any variation of the Adams dry fly, because you can see it. And when fishing
cane, the pleasure is in the cast and dropping the fly exactly where you intend, then getting a good, drag-free float. It makes no difference if there are any
fish in the stream or not. If your objective is to "catch fish" then history tells us some variation of the soft hackle fly would be the most
productive. And I believe it from my own experience. But since when was catching fish really that important? You retain them for less than 30 seconds anyway,
then they are off waiting to be caught again.

The fly that has quickly become my go-to this year on trout streams (don't fish lakes at all) is a size 16 sparkle pheasant tail. I found this pattern
early this year and it's been spectacular.

Jeremy,
It was good to see a vote for the bivisible. A great attractor pattern, in my opinion, that imitates a great number of flies. Seems to be rather neglected these days. I prefer it sparsely tied. Bob

Thanks Bob.
This happened to be suggested to me from a good friend who's a fine fisherman and pretty much a "trout mentor". Sometimes I get lucky. Jeremy. |

I have thought hard and long on this. I at one time might have said an ant or a beetle but for year long fishing in all sorts of conditions my choice would be
an ICSI midge.

Prior to this year I would have said a Prince Nymph or an Olive Wooly Bugger.
But this year it seems like every time the fishing was slow I would tie on a Crackleback and catch fish. |

I,d have to go with an early and a late season fly. Early a parachute adams and late season ,say august on I switch to a stimulator in yellow and orange. I
usually use a bit of crystal
in wing, not for fish but for me to see the fly,and not any smaller than a 12 or 14,again for me to see.I seldom switch to
anything else as these seem to work most of time. I keep saying next year I,m going to learn to fish wets better, but seem to always go back to these. I,ll tye
up some of your favorites in wets for next year and make another stab at them. Daryl
