Has anyone used the mandrels for ferrules JD Wagner sells? I dont have a lathe and lapping does not seem to be a good solution.

I have them and really like them, but I do use them with a lathe.
Alternatively, if you chucked them in a drill that was clamped in a vise they would probably work. Alternatively, you could just use the butt end of the correct-size drill bit. Hnery

What holds the ferrule in place? Are they just shafts that fit the ID? I was going to use the drill, or maybe even my drill press if they would stay on.....thanks, Mike |

Yes, they are simply short pieces of drill bit blanks. Friction provides a plenty tight fit. I love mine and wonder how I ever did without them. That said, I
always mount the ferrules to the rod before fitting male to female. But I use the mandrels Jeff sells for thinning the tabs down to a very fine edge.

Thanks Guys, you just saved me $47 I think. I only need one size13/64 right now so I will get a length of brass from the hardware store for a few dollars and
try that. Maybe to use it on a drill press I could put some ducktape over the edge to help hold it in place. I have made 11 blanks so far all the same size,
sold 8 of them on EBay, Im ready to move to the next step and start to put a rod together. I have made several wood handles that have came out looking good, at
least to me, and am looking for some nice butt caps and ring hard ware. Inch by Inch, Step by Step, Slowly I turn.....Mike

Go to use-enco.com and look at page 17 of the catalog at the drill and reamer blanks. That's what I use to turn down ferrule tabs on the drill press or
lathe. A friction fit is all it takes. http://www.use-enco.com/C...PG=INLMK3&PMITEM=325-5579

I found the solution to my problem, I will get a key chuck w/ a morse taper that fits my wood lathe. Get some of those drill blanks Tightloup talked about and
that will be that....what a great site...thanks again to all.....Mike
