Posts: 3 10/29/2008 10:48	Tags : None I have an 8'6", 3/2 rod; marked Courtney Ryley Cooper, New Premier Doublebuilt(written). Just above the hookeep is the number 2517, the oval red Double Built emblem , and Trademark written below it. Dark female ferrules. Reel seat is metal uplocking with a knurled buttcap screwing up into the black seat(silver colored bands). 6" grip is ridged a little on the top third, otherwise nice(& has good dirt). Wrappings are yellow-black varieagated. Tips are straight and original - all sections are 34.5" exact. Original unmarked metal tube with cap and one bad ding. Rod sock is olive drab with orange piping tagged Split Bamboo Fishing Rod, No. 2517, Length 8 1/2', Made in USA. I'd put it's condition at Grade 6-7. Fits together nicely and a good looker. There is no South Bend mark anywhere, but the rod is thought to be South Bend Pre WWII. Any thoughts on value & age would be most appreciated! THANKS!

Posts: 67 10/29/2008 12:15	BBBUD, It sounds like your assessment of the rod's maker is correct. It sounds like a South Bend trade rod based on your description. The model number is not a SB model and not a Cross model either. The wraps are most likey black and white jasper which was a standard wrap color of SB and used on many pre-war vintage rods, as I am guessing your rod is of 1930-1939 vintage. I have seen many SB trade rods, but have not run across a doublebuilt one yet, but it makes sense that they would have produced them. As for the Courtney Riley Cooper connection......here is where it gets interesting. Cooper was a famous angler who put his name on several Winchester rods and tackle products from the late 1920's to 1935, presumably. Even though I have not seen any other evidence, it is possible that Cooper also endorsed some of the higher grade SB trade rods on behalf of another retailer after his contract with Winchester was over. If this is true, it would seem to date your rod in the latter half of the 1930's. My 1 1/2 cents worth. Rick

Posts: 1710 10/29/2008 12:20	I have one of these. It's nice, though a little soft in the tips to take full advantage of the doublebuilt butt and mid. I paid $75 for it 6 years ago as a single tip rod needing a small repair to the tip. I would expect a complete one in good original shape to bring between $150 and $200 perhaps.

Posts: 11 11/01/2008 17:34	According to Michael Sinclair's book on bamboo rod restoration, Courtney Ryley Cooper switched allegiance from Winchester to South Bend in 1931, after Winchester was sold to Horrocks-Ibbotson. Sinclair wrote, "At South Bend, Cooper's name was seen on at least two Cross double-built models."
