cabinet project |

I started this cabinet last November and finally finished this weekend. It was a lot of work, but I was sidetracked on a number of other projects along the
way. I plan to keep my fly tying and rod building supplies in it. The case is cherry. The drawer fronts are made from shop sawn, book matched spalted maple
veneer. I lined half of the drawer bottoms with felt. The base is made from European beech that I ebonized with a combination of dye, oil based stain and
shellac. During construction, I thought the ebony base was a good idea, but now I'm not so sure. I can always make a new base if it bothers me too much.

Nicely done. Where did you find the drawer pulls?

tightloup wrote:Kurt, This is a large part of your project that impressed me to no end. Not many folks take the time to do this. You must have a nice bandsaw to do the resawing. Impressive! Are those full extension slides? A superb bit of crafting if I may say so. Also your base is very nice. I wouldn't touch a thing. How'd you finish it? (the cabinet) You should be proud. Thanks guys. The drawer pulls were purchased on ebay. The auction claimed they were originally purchased from Restoration Hardware, but there was no
indication of that on the packaging I received. The finish was chrome, but I decided to buff them to a matte finish instead. I finished the cherry case with
Formby's Tung Oil Finish and the drawer fronts with clear shellac to minimize any darkening. The full extensions are also from ebay. They are much
cheaper buying that way than from the local cabinet shop supply places in town. Currently, I am the owner of three band saws, but the veneer was cut on my
friend's Jet 16" or 18" saw when I was at his house in Dallas. We split the cost of the board and the veneer after sawing. I bet this veneer
was cut 3-4 years ago. That's how long it took me to finally get around to the project. Another friend of mine that lives close to me recently purchased
a drum sander so I ran the veneer through his machine prior to laminating the drawer fronts.

Really impressive job. Looks great as is. You mentioned rod building supplies, do you build bamboo rods?

Thanks, Winston59. Yes, I make rods. I've made about 13 or so rods. I haven't made one in a while though. I enjoy working on other projects like
boat building too. Once I start on a boat, that will eat up 3 to 6 months out of the year. I have wanted to start on the next boat project for over a year
now and unfortunately it hasn't made it to the top of the list yet. Too many projects and too little time.

I was just checking out the Merlin Canoe on your site, that is a beauty. Do you build nets for fly fishing?
