Sawyers Killer Bug |
Lead | ||
|
The last three days found me fishing the GSMNP, I used two flies a size 16 Cahill and a Sawyers Killer Bug and it was a killer. There were numerous flys
hatching including Green Drakes. I don't if that why it was so hot but it was. Thanks Bob for turning me onto the fly.

Well, I pulled the trigger guys. Probably spent more than I should have but I just had to have that yarn. It's actually a much bigger card of yarn
than I thought it would be. It's not the size of one of those silly little chenille cards we see in the fly shops. It appears to be the genuine stuff to.
I was concerned about that actually.

Sawyer Nymphs | #8 | ||

When I lived in the UK I had the opportunity to meet Margaret and Anne Sawyer. I bought Sawyer nymphs by the card for 50 pence a fly or about $1.00 each. I
used them for rafffle prizes for may auctions over the years. I still have a few and did get the chance to visit with Anne over Christmas this year.

Here's a link to watch Oliver Edwards tying Sawyers' Killer Bug ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y-caF_s6C5Q), which is where I learned to tie the KB.

I saw CreakyCane's item "Noticed that the Jna 07 issue of the UK mag Fly Fishing and Fly Tying has an artivle by Terry Lawton on Pink Hues in flies
and talks about Chawicks 477 and other yarms for the KB..." so I put up a post the UK board and a guy scanned the article for me and put it in .pdf
format and emailed it to me. Great article

Lawton mentions in his book that the 477 had reddish filaments in it but I could not see the red with my old eyes. I then examined some 477 that Bob sent me
along with a similiar yarn under high magnification and you can indeed see red filaments intermixed with the much lighter gray. Evidently the trout like the
mix. Don

Sawyer's Killer Bug | #12 | ||

I was glancing through Leslie Magee's book "Fly Fishing The North Country Tradition" again today and a statement on page 11 caught my
eye, where he stated:
"Of the 3000 grayling which I have caught (and returned) during the past 25 years two-thirds have been taken one one pattern, Sawyer's Killer Bug on a sinking line. Although this pattern is often claimed to be of little use away from chalk streams, particularly on the rough streams where shrimps are not plentiful, those who make such claims do not realize that many species of caddis larvae are non-case making, and that Sawyer, a good observer himself, said that he did not invent it to represent any specific insect or larvae."
