I think that A.J. Thramer, Hardy and Payne made rods in that length.

Text is from a previous post by someone on this forum and the chart is one I
have been complying.
From the Classic Fly Rod Forum "Glad you've discovered the fun of these little rods. Not to put too fine a
point on it but, perhaps before your time (early 60's) Arnold Gingrich and cohorts promoted a small, 4'4" rod NAMED the "BANTY". Hardy
built them (4'4") called the Phantom Hallokona and made some of the same exclusively for A&F labelled "Banty". Orvis joined in the game
with their 4'4" rod named the "Banty" and sold it exclusively through agreement with A&F. Jim Payne made a 4'4" model named
"Banty", also sold through A&F. AJ Thramer has tweaked the Payne Banty and developed his own 4'4" Banty for a#4 line, now sometimes
called the "Thramer 444" as opposed to "Banty" but it's lineage is clear. And so, the time was when a gentleman fished a
"Banty" fly rod, he was fishing a specific model that was 4'4" long and cast a # 4 or #5 line. As such these were serious, though
specialized rods and came into their own on small, brush-choked streams. Pinpoint accuracy was one of their noted benefits but the short rod made the fish
close to the angler's hand throughout the take, fighting and landing and made for an intense, extremely interactive experience with the fish. I am afraid
an entire generation of fly fishers has grown up now unaware of these wonderful little "niche" rods and just how capable and fun they are to fish.
Today, the term "banty" has become generic for those rods somewhat shorter than "midge" rods. But it's kind of fun knowing the
originals were specific 4'4" rods for some pretty specific reasons and developed a serious, if small following. So when you advertise you are looking
for "Banty" fly rods, there are still many of us old codgers out there who take it you mean the 4'4" rod once offered by the big name
manufacturers of the day. Why 4'4"? There's a whole story in itself surrounding that. Pick up some of Arnold Gingrich's books, most
particularly the, "TOYS of a Lifetime" title and enjoy reading about the history of these diminutive little rods.

the 444 was based on a Thramer 'D' taper, the forerunner to my 'Dx' taper that i use for my Grouse Creek rods these days. Any similarity to any
other 4ft 4in rod is coincidental. When the rod was first designed there was little trading of classic tapers. The few short rods i was able to cast at the
time were a different breed entirely, they were stiff and fast. i had a request for a true med action 4wt banty and the 444 is what i came up with. hundreds
have been built if the feedback i received is any indication though less than two dozen have been made by me, the rod taper was embraced enthusiastically by
many amateur rodmakers. Never have compared it to other makers banty rods but if it is similar to a Payne then i would like to think it is a case of 'great
minds thinking alike'

Art, IIRC that was you and I that discussed that not so long ago.
AJ, I'm one of those hundreds of amatures that embraced that little booger.I built it for one particular mountain stream but have fished it on many others that have similar characteristics. It's a sweetheart, especially to someone who enjoys fishing the shortest rod I can get away with under any circumstance. Cyrus, nice collection of bantys you have there. It sure makes me feel good to know I'm not the only short rod nut in the room .I like the chunky grip on the Chris McDowell rod.I'll bet it's a blast
to fish with....................Will

Greendrake II,
I know I asked about it, I made a copy of a taper for one,, I just can not find it. Was hoping the same info would appear again.. (a sign of a scattered mind , I think) Thanks to all for their thoughts. Art |

AJ,
I built one years ago. I think I built it as a one piece, but I could be wrong. I remember being able to cast a full line with it when I demonstrated it wasn't a toy. I donated the rod to the club's raffle so I didn't have it for long. Wish I had it now. Kurt www.loup-garou.net |

Well, it is done......... actually two are done.. I went with AJ's taper. Very happy with the results. I too made it a 1 piece. I may ferrule the 2nd
blank, just for fun..
Thanks to all that replied. Regards, Art |

Kurt,
While I'm sure it was a wonderful rod, you being able to cast an entire line with it only reminds me that you are a heckuva caster! Remember, I've seen you in action. Guys at SRG still talk about watching you cast. It's a delight. Harry

Harry, Thanks. I'm exaggerating a bit. It was only a 70-80' fly line. Sure they aren't confusing me with Morten? Morten can cast a lot of line.
