I am in the market for a 3 wt rod. Can anybody give me an idea of graphite 3 wts that will have a similar slower action like my fiberglass. Any idea what brands/ models to look at?

OT: Graphite/Fiberglass question? |

I've got a 5# 7 1/2' 2 piece fiberglass rod that I love. It has a med/slow action, flex from tip to at least to the ferrule if not further in the
blank. I bought a TFO rod that I guess is pretty fast, all the flex if any way up at the tip.

In my humble opinion, the nicest 3 wt around is the old school 7.5 foot 2/1 Orvis Tippet, pretty much casts itself within 30 feet, and flexes right into the
grip, you can feet the shaft bend under the cork, the plastic rod I keep in the truck all the time, Todd

Reportedly, Mike McFarland's Vintage model rods are slow. My personal experience is that the Orvis Superfine Trout Bum 1wt (7.5ft, 4pc) makes a nice slower
3wt. -CC

Try to locate a Winston pre-IM6 graphite. Hard to find but worth the trouble.

Also try to locate an early Orvis "Ultra Fine" 7'9", 2/2 for a two weight which handles a three weight with equal aplomb. The rod does just about everything you mentioned in your five weight version. The taper & older graphite resin technology appears to give the rod blank slightly more mass, and dampens a bit slower allowing the rod blank to work deeper in the overall length of the rod… a rod that almost wants to cast itself! I like it second to my light line cane rods. The older generation Orvis graphite fly rods had the unsanded scrim finish with the spiral tape markings on the rod blanks. Good rod hunting…

Here's a link to a good article on light line non bamboo fly rod history, etc.

If I had one plastic rod - I think it is as cloes as you can get to a Bamboo rod. Soft, able to handle small flies and light tippet. Or an old Winston San
Francisco 7'6" for a four weight

Walton Powell Silver Signature 8', 2/2 for weight 3/4 line. The only graphite rod I own (except for a J. Kennedy Fisher 10' 6" 5/6 weight, for
which I need to find a stripping guide.) A definite exception to the usual run of graphite rods that I've cast, which call for a faster casting stroke than
I care to use and don't have much in the way of "feel." The Silver Signature just feels like a very light and well-designed fiberglass rod-
flexing down to about halfway into the butt section, but quick, not soggy. Not all that easy to find, though.
I also once had a Normark rod made for them by Lamiglas- it was 10' 6", for 4/5 weight line. Unexpectedly, I found it to be too soft for my liking! I sold it, but maybe I should have tried a 3-weight with it first. I bought that one from across the pond...the European rod market features a much wider selection of 9 1/2-11 ft. rods rated for light line weights. I've also read good things over on the Fiberglass Flyrodders site about some of the Japanese fiberglass rods, like Axsico, which are designed to handle very light lines- 2/3/4- and are made in a variety of lengths, up to 8 ft. or so. http://fiberglassflyrodders.yuku.com/

Other than my Vintage Series, which unfortunately would be close to a year wait, the only modern graphite rod that I think has a really soft, glass-like action
is the T&T Paradigm. Other than that I agree with other's recommendations of the old Scott G and the old Orvis Superfines. I am a little biased, but
if you don't want bamboo I would recommend sticking with glass. Here again, I couldn't offer anything in the near future, but you could try Mark
Steffen or look for a nice used 3 wt glass rod.

The new Hardy glass rods feel cane like, at least the 3wt that I lawn cast did ... they are just now beginning to arrive at Dealers but only a few at a time.
My local Dealer told me they "hope to have several models in by the end of the year".

I'd recommend a Steffan Brothers fiberglass 3 weight. I have one built on one of their blanks and love it.
For graphite, a Sage SLT is silky smooth as are the Sage ZXLs. While your at it, I'd test cast the Sage TXL too. |

I'd also recommend looking for a glass 3 wt. I've fished both graphite and glass 3 wts and prefer glass in most situations.

Orvis 7'6" 3# Superfine ... in a tie with the Far and Fine for the best of the Orvis Superfines. For a plastic rod, it's hard to beat.

The only one I ever bought is the 7 1/2' Orvis One Weight and fish a #3 Great rod and my fishing partner bought the Superfine 7'6" 1 1/2 oz 3wt.
Its the rod that Monty Montana is talking about. We had a lot of fun landing lots of 14" to 17" fish.
