Early Christmas Present | #246
|
Here's one I just finished as a Christmas present for my brother. I finished the rod early and we got to cast it early the other morning. The rod is my
"Big Creek" 7'6" 4 weight. I turned up a matching set of Duronze ferrules and reel seat hardware, and the winding check also matches the
Claro Walnut reel seat insert.
And here's the new owner casting his early Christmas present.

Am going nodeless for this year's rods. Prepared strips for six rods over the summer. Have planned and glued up two 7', 2/2, 4wt blanks from Roy
Gould's collection. Have planned blanks for two Garrison 209's and should be ready to glue them up this weekend. The final two will be 7'9",
3/2 rods. One will be on a Wayne Cattanach taper. The other will be a taper that I am attempting to develop on what Gould refers to as a double parabolic.
Love planning those nodeless strips! |

Inspired by ideas I picked up at Corbett Lake this year, I've made three rods this summer and fall. The first was an 8-1/2', 6/7 "Tru-Arc"
taper from Tom Fulk and Roger Fairfield. The rod is hollowed to .070" wall thickness with no dams or fluting, except at the ferrule stations. I used the
Fries integrated bamboo ferrule system for the first time. This has proved to be a very powerful, smooth casting rod, and has become my favorite for fishing
cutthroat and resident silvers in Puget Sound. The rod feels really durable, though I'm still a bit concerned about how well it will hold up over time.
Extensive testing will be required......
I liked this rod so well that I made a 9' version, which I haven't had a chance to fish yet. The third rod I made is a 12" Spey Rod using the Hoergaard HC 8/9 Taper that's published in various sources. The butt section of this rod is .540" right above the cork handle, which proved to be a real challenge to make. The strips had to be wide enough, and sanded flat to avoid gaps. I used 25:1 scarf joints rather than ferrules, so the rod is assembled with electrical tape. Some advanced math was required to cut each section to equal length, including scarf joints, so that the assembeled rod comes out exactly 12' long. I bought an old Hardy St. John reel on E-Bay, and loaded it with a 550 grain Skagit Spey Line. The has lots of power for this type of fishing and casts reasonably well for me, even though my spey casting technique is awful. Hopefully I'll get out some this winter to improve my casting. All three of these rods used techniques that were new to me, which is a lot of fun. Bamboo rods are steeped in tradition, but there are some very creative Rodmakers out there.. Tom |

Hi Tom B, I was wondering what glue you used on the hollow rod with w/.070. Curious how it will last . I like to see things that are different. I believe
Beaver head rods was using snow board glue for his ?

This one was recently delivered to a customer. Medium flamed 6'3wt 2/2 with Thuya Burl reel seat and blued hardware. Cast FAST and accurate. 3.75"
Reel seat, 4.5" Grip. The ferrules and reel seat hardware are made in my shop. The wraps are Cinnamon tipped with dark brown... very understated and
classy looking rod.

What thread did you use for wraps? | #252

Bob, I have a blonde rod I need to rewrap and has the same color insert as your wraps. Where did you get the cinnamon thread? Maybe I can order some to rewrap
my rod.

That's a YLI Thread and I have the number at the shop. I'm not quite ready to drag this new steel knee back up there yet, but when I do, I'll get
the thread number for you.

Nice - Pound Ridge eh - Does Kimberly Brooke still hold trout? Grew up on Park View Rd spending my days in the PR Reservation.... Your rod looks like it would
be perfect for catching a bronze back or two where it flows into the Cross River reservoir... Great memories - here's to great memories made with your
first rod!
