Ari T. Hart Rainbow Reel |

Anybody know anything about the history and value of the ATH Rainbow 259? It is grey in color and the drag is a finger control lever on the side opposite from
the handle and the foot is offset. Is it from the early 90's? Thanks!

I cannot help, but I do love this reel. About 6 years ago, there was one for sale at Urban Angler in NYC. I think it was$750. I constantly kick myself for not
buying it. Have never seen another for sale. If anyone has one for sale, I'd be interested.

Hi;
Thanks! This reel is a large reel 3 1/2" diameter and about a 2" width (1" inside spool width). I don't own it, a customer of mine wants to trade it in. If you have any questions about it. call me at 818 785-7306 PST 10-6 or e-mail at swe7890@aol.com Thanks, Steve |

Considering that other more common ATH reels are finally bringing a decent$$$, I would think that $750.00 for an Opal finished Rainbow would be a very good
price, indeed. I used one for years for bonefishing and liked it a lot. The Opalized finish is very strong and durable. It has only a modest amount of drag
range, but it does have a means of microadjusting it. Hopefully, you'll get instructions with it so you'll know how to do it as I've forgotten.

ATH RAINBOW | #4 | ||

I agree with Jim who is more of an ATH authority than I am. Nevertheless, I think he understates it. Personally I believe the current value of a Rainbow,
especially opalized, is probably approaching well over a thousand dollars. I am a collector and hate to see that when I am buying. There has been four or five
for sale on ebay and main tackle auctions last few years, and now I would not hope getting into one at less than a thousand even if used. When you see F series
selling for $600 plus regularly... Thankfully I have a couple opalized Rainbows already. If yours has the Keyhole perforations, it may be worth even more. I
have seen ATH Rainbow reels in the UK go for well over seven hundred pounds this year (and others are commanding just as high prices - such as the CI and the
Remco - even Danish ones..., so call it $1,400 for a decent opal Rainbow. Have to admit - it is not a great fishing reel - heavy, bad soiunding ingoing click,
but boy was it ahead of its time (even today - more reels should be offset...) like most of Ari's stuff - that is why I collect...

tarponfisher wrote: By "good price" I was saying it was a great price for purchasing one, alluding to how the value may, in fact, be higher yet. Essentially, I spent a couple of years advising guys who wanted to sell their ATH stuff to hang on to them for awhile if they could as the prices were not up to the level I thought they'd achieve. Within two years prices on even the fairly common items like the F series have almost doubled so for once it looked like I gave out good advice. I am surprised at what a Danish Remco will bring if what you say is true, and I'm sure it is. That's amazing. I haven't handled a Rainbow in several years so I forgot what the ingoing click sounded like. I do remember them as being fairly heavy, although back in the mid-90s when these were current that was true of a lot of reels compared to much of what's being made today. |

more pictures in "View my images" in my profile. Is this an earlier or later version of the Rainbow?

Hi Niklas;
I guess maybe somebody got sloppy at the factory. How old do you think this reel is? Would you think that it would be practical to reverse it or just leave it alone? Thanks, Steve |

RAINBOW Repair | #13 | ||

Steve,
unscrew the two screws (red arrows) and turn the reel body axial in 180° (so that the letters are near the reel feet). The Rainbows were built 1993 to 1995 in three versions: opal (like yours), black and copper(philipsbrown)/silver. Hope I can help you with this. Regards Niklas

I've studied these photos for quite some time and am convinced one doesn't know if the reel is set up wrong unless one also knows which way the handle
cranks. In other words, this reel has a RH/LH clutch and therefore would seem to be set up correctly for LH retrieve. Now, if the crank doesn't work for
left hand then one either needs to either convert that internally or swing the frame around as directed. In either case, the spool is supposed to be canted
forward so that it sits under the hand while using it. As long as the reel cranks in the right direction and the spool is canted forward all should be set up
correctly.
