I am about to acquire a George Halstead fly rod and realize that with the exception of the few very brief comments in Keane's book I don't know
anything at all about the man. The rod is very fine but I think that every rod is improved when I learn something about the builder. Can anyone tell me where I
can learn more about him? Thanking you in advance. Best regards, Bill Lambot

"George H. Halstead: Tribute to a Classic Bamboo Rodbuilder" by John A. Feldenzer, published in the Vol. 34, No. 1 (Winter 2008) issue of
The American Fly Fisher, the quarterly journal of the American Museum of Fly Fishing. Check for availability of a back
issue by contacting Rebecca Nawrath at (802) 362-3300 or via e-mail at amff3@amff.com
John Feldenzer occasionally participates in the Forum as BluDun55, so a PM to him about Halstead may also gets results if his schedule allows.
Quashnet's Paul H. Young Rod Database has photos and descriptions of 385 PHY Co. rods, plus catalogs, accessories,
etc. Thank you to all who continue to send me PHY rod photos and info.

Q,
Thank you for the great information. I have contacted the museum and just bought their last copy of the issue. Perhaps other forum members will know of other resources. Thanks again. Sincerely, Bill |

Get in touch with John Gallas. He has probably seen as many and knows as much about Halstead rods as anyone. He also has (or had) a Halstead Tribute rod
series that I hear are very nice.

Hi Bill,
Most of what I know of George Halstead is in the paper that you now have. Contact me with questions. I do have a sizeable representation of Halstead rods in my collection. John |

John,
Thank you for your kind offer. I will have your article and my rod within the next two or three days. Two more reasons for Thanksgiving! Where are you located? I live in MA and commute to my office in Hartford, CT. I would be happy to drive anywhere in New England if it gave me the opportunity to meet you in person, perhaps get your comments on my new fly rod and possibly even see your collection if you ever allow that. Thank you again for your message. Best regards, Bill Lambot |

I live in Ridgefield, CT, former hometown of George Halstead (and Pinky Gillum) and have been lucky enough to have found three Halstead rods in town over
the years, two of which were purchased from the original owner, who had bought them at Halstead's shop in Danbury. That fellow had nothing but good things
to say about Halstead (the man) and said he was a gentleman and a pleasure to deal with.

Hi Bill,
I live in Virginia. If you are ever going to be in the Old Dominion, send me a PM. I'd be happy to show you my Halsteads. You will recognize my avatar as the cover photo on the Journal (The American Fly Fisher, Winter, 2008). It shows the reelseats on three classic Halsteads. |

Your Halstead Tribute | #8 | ||
|
John,
Last week I received the back issue of The American Fly Fisher mentioned above which contains your portrait of George Halstead. I read it over the holiday. It is wonderful and I am very happy to have it. Information about Halstead's life and his fly rods remains virtually unknown even among my acquaintances with encyclopediac knowledge about fly rods and their builders. Your article presents a fasinating picture of the man and his work. The photographs are marvelous. I will have my Halstead rod at the end of the week. According to the rod code that you explain in your article it is a 1082. My bamboo rod guru, Ron Deluca, tells me that it casts a 5 weight very nicely and a 6 weight even better. I will appreciate it ten times more for having read your tribute. Thank you very much for spot lighting a shadowy figure. I enjoyed your profile very much and I hope that my travels allow me to thank you in person some day in the future. Very best regards, Bill Lambot |
