Kermit - I see many familar titles - one you don't see referred to much is Romilly Fedden's Golden Days, which is a super book - I think you have it in
the series...have you read it? Very enjoyable and timeless.....makes me want to visit Brittany again....

Kermit,
That's quite a setup you have there. Great time out room. Wife and I spent a few days in Santa Fe a couple of years ago. Beautiful place-plan to come back next spring following a visit to a niece in Clovis,NM. Also plan to try fishing the Pecos. Dave |

Just new to fly and bamboo in the last year. Read the popular books (Casting a Spell, Spliting Cane and Fishing Bamboo). Just got Playing with Fire. Is there a
list of must reads for fly fishing and bamboo rods? Interest includes both fishing and collecting. Lawrence

YMC,
Just a few ideas- both tackle and the appreciation of our sport in the era of bamboo (especially interesting are the discussions of tackle in that era). Few titles are only centered on all cane - but many titles talk of fishing and then a section on tackle. Not a semi-complete list at all - just scanned my bookcase for favorites: Harmon Henkin's Fly Tackle ( very inexpensive, and full of opinions); Campbell - Classic & Antique Fly fishing Tackle; D.B. Homel - Antique & Collectible Fishing Rods (get latest edition); Howard Back - The waters of Yellowstone ( available & beautiful appreciation in an earlier era); Francis - Catskill Rivers (appreciation of a wonderous region); Schweibert - the section in Trout (Vol II)on cane ( fast summary - definitely perhaps loose with detail - but interesting long range view of cane rods); Datus Proper - What the Trout Said ( wonderful look at flies and various designs from an intriguing mind - wit and anecdotes galore); Charles Brooks - The Henry's Fork and The Living river ( his loving, informative, and historical look at two wonderful western rivers); McClane - The Practical Fly Fisherman ( wonderful info from an earlier era - it still works- nice sction on tackle); Leonard Wright - Fly Fishing Heresies ( an innovative mind - on trout and gear section, also)... Gotta add, Sid Gordon's How to Fish from Top to Bottom( Ican add little as Charlie Fox endosed this book) - great on all aspects of fishing - especially interesting when talking of the standard 9 - 9.5 cane rods of the time and #4-6 wets as standard!!! The list goes on...just a start ... Your titles are great - loved Casting A Spell -- Playing with Fire is impressive scholarship and very interesting... NB

I still think Martin Keane's book, Cassic Rods and Rodmakers is a must for anyone interested in the history of Bamboo Rods. The book, however, is
somewhat rare and will cost a small fortune. Luckily my library let me photocopy the whole book.

You're very right - I have held off on Classic Rods due to the scarcity. Gotta wish for a reissue...
