Happy Thanksgiving, everyone. I just purchased an 8 1/2' Phillipson Paramount. It's a 3/2 (maybe they all were) all sections full length, relatively
straight, original tube, sock missing, all original wraps. The down side: the finish is peeling like a moulting snake. Long ribbons of varnish are pulling
off the rod, almost like the effects of heat, or moisture, or both. The tube seems to have large quantities of wax (smells just like car wax) deposited on the
sides. This rod looks to me to be impregnated, the cane is a lot darker than my Powr Pakt. I have several questions if anyone could help me. 1) Is this rod
likely to be impregnated, my limited resources are ambigous on whether the Paramount was made in an impregnated version. 2) Can I strip the rod for
revarnishing and retain the original wraps? They are 100% there and pretty good shape. Any method suggestions would be welcome. 3) Winding check is
corroded and some little chunks of material are missing. Anybody got any procedures for this? 4) I thought I might try dipping the rod in varnish using my
epoxy wheel (fly tying) as the motor for the extraction mechanism. Anyone got horror or success stories on this. 5) Anyone got any tips on removing the wax
crude buildup from the sides of the tube. Thanks.

If you can post some pictures that would help in determining whether the rod can be refinished. I have a 9' paramount that was too close to a fire and
has some of the varnish peeling off. I also have several other Phillipsons and a couple of those are Paramounts, and the cane on all of them is pretty much
the same color. I'm not sure the if the Paramount was ever impregnated maybe someone else on this board knows.
As far as stripping the rod and keeping the wraps intact, that can be done, there are many here on this site that have done it before and can give you excellent advice. Bruce |

Phillipson did make some impregnated rods as described on Banjos website http://mysite.verizon.net...yberspacecopy/index.html. However it is
not clear whether the Paramount was among them--Larry

A little info on your Phillipson Paramount. Per Dick Spurr and Michael Sinclair's book Colorado Classic Cane I would conclude that the Paramount rod was never built as an impregnated rod. In their "Overview of the Phillipson Fly Rods" it is stated, "the success of the impregnated rods (actually) led to the demise of the Paramount and Premium! Their first impregnated rods were introduced in 1953 and by 1955 all their offerings were impregnated. Hope this helps a little. In my opinion, the Paramount is the most attractive rod Phillipson built. Definitely worth a restoration! Bob p.s. Dr. Strangelove is, in my opinion, the best black humor film ever produced!!! Thanks so far for the help. I am anxious to get this rod's finish restored, that's really about all the rod needs to be in decent condition and
fishable. Hard to believe that this rod is such a different color than my Powr Pakt and not impregnated. I would supply pics, but I'm not sure how to do
it to be honest. If I can figure it out, you may see them here in a couple of days...
