Recently visiting Glenn Brackett in Twin Bridges I showed him my Carpenter Prototype Browntone Parabolic 7'1 2/2 4wt. he was amazed how fine the tips were
so much so he measured them and said under varnish .047. Do you have examples of fine tips? I would like to hear how fine they can be. Thanks
Best, Dennis

In mid-October, thanks to Bob Summers, I had the opportunity to cast a rod that Paul H. Young built in March 1948 for his own use. As far as I know there is
nothing like it among cataloged Young rod models. It is nine feet long, 2/2, weighs 3-3/4 oz, has a 14/64 ferrule and a 3/64 tiptop. I believe this should be
the same tip thickness as the Carpenter rod. With a DT4F line, the Young rod was limber and lively. Bob said he could easily imagine Mr. Young casting and
managing a small Strawman nymph with this long. light, flexible rod.
Quashnet's Paul H. Young Rod Database has photos and descriptions of over
390 PHY Co. rods, plus catalogs, accessories, etc. Thank you to all
who continue to send me PHY rod photos and info.

Here are a few on rods I have Dennis.
FE Thomas 6'-8" Fairy has a tip at 0.050 7' Brooks / Leonard 3734AMC has tips at 0.058 9' Leonard Fairy Catskill (1920's) with tips at 0.062 and I was told this was the heavy version. Hard to believe when your holding the rod in your hands. Regards, Alan |

Dennis:
I have a very unusual "one ounce" baby Catskill that I bought from Ed (gofish60) that is the finest I have come across. The rod weighs 1.37 ozs and sports a step down ferrule that mikes at just under 7/64. The tip is 45 thou over varnish measured just downstream of the tiptop. That would translate to approximatelly 41 thou after the varnish correction. The usual Leonard 6ft baby catskill tips are 54 under varnish. By the way I would love to try and copy this rod. Can anyone out there make me a 7/64 step down?

Dennis,
I've got a seven foot Leonard Baby Catskill which has tips that are .043. Both tips are broken off about ten inches down from the tiptop which is no surprise to me. It's a buggy whip for sure but I'm going to make replacement tips for it. Billy |

How about a Thomas & Thomas TTT with tips smaller than a toothpick? Tom Dorsey said the TTT, which stands for Thomas & Thomas Toy, was made because he
wanted to see how small he could make tips and still have it fishable. Most were sent over to Japan. Rod was made in 1989 and is a DT2. Picture to follow

Dennis,
You and other rodmakers amaze me how you can build those ultra fine tips. What type of action does the FE 8' 3/2 have? Best, Dennis |

Dennis,
One of the favorite rods I've made is a 7'9" 3wt. with a tip measurement of .042. I made the 4wt. version at .045. It had a lovely action and I never had a problem with my own. When I first made the taper, it was a trial and error sort of thing and I didn't even realize at the time that I was pushing any kind of limit. However, over the years I eventually did have a customer break one near the tip-top and finally decided that it wasn't worth it. Nowadays, the smallest I like to go is .057 or so. Dennis, its a med fast progressive 4-5wt with a fairly large gradual swelled butt. the rod casts drys nicely right out of the tip out to 50-60 ftnot for
super windy days but would do just fine on the firehole in the park.heres a couple of photos of the original ,and one of the last ive done for a recent
customer in california.

Dennis,
That's a beautiful rod. I like the gradual swelled butt. I would have guessed the rod action to be medium since most of 3/2 FE's I've owned have been medium. I like a med-fast action and sold all the 3/2's and found the FE 2/2 fit the bill for me but now I know they one med-fast. Thanks for the pics. Best, Dennis

dennis, i think the skinny tips along with the swelled butt makes it feel like a med fast more than the regular F.E.specials ive cast. it really is designed
to cast the delicate dries.
