Thanks for the info Bulldog. Maybe I'll fool around with it sometime when I should be doing something else but don't wanna.

Does anyone know where to get a replacement thrust washer that puts pressure on the back of the spool of some models? It's thin brass and the bend has
worked out of it so it's too flat to work well. I used a flat nylon washer that's just thick and soft enough to work really well, but for purities sake
i would love to replace with brass.
When I match wits with a trout, I usually lose...

if you have something that works, that's great - stick with it.
recently, I have had luck buying laminated shim washers from McMaster - but they're expensive - $6/pop.
the rods are never obsolete - the marketing is.

I loaded the same line, a Cortland 444 DT5, on a Martin MG10 and went to a farm pond last night. It was a much better matchup, no hand/arm fatigue after two hours. |

trootfisher,
It doesn't appear you need much more convincing--especially about the 76. I have one lined with a DT5, its line guard reversed for LHW, its retrieve set on either silent or click according to whim. As sturdy as a Sherman tank, it's a tad hefty, takes a lot of thumping about without damage, but is real purty in its way. I keep its nifty line weight indicator set on HEH just to show the boys I know what I'm doing. The 76 goes everywhere I fish and sees use especially in those places where I have a history of slipping on my keister. I also keep a 90 lined with a DT5. The 90 is Ocean City's distinctive automatic-and/or- manual retrieve (which an Italian reelmaker has deemed fit to reinvent in a considerably lighter version that looks anemic alongside the 90). You know that old descriptor: "slim and trim as an Italian pistol." The 90 is always popping up at sales and gets about the same price I paid for mine new. I got mine when I was in high school, and I'll be 75 in a couple of months. So it's as close to a sure bet as you're likely to find anywhere that I'll break before it does. I sometimes use it for exercising, instead of a barbell, when I'm feeling guilty about being out of shape. It's a lot more fun. I've acquired many more reels than I can justify according to need, not that I'd try. For I've followed the example of those other sinners who regularly contribute to this section and to my delinquency. The two Ocean Citys (Cities?) still go, like old friends, on many fishing trips. Friends who keep silent at the poker table. |
