Today found a box in the attic that contains the first ten volumes of FFM. Are any issues of particular value?

All have a "value" not found in today's magazines but, for our purposes, Vol. 5, No. 3 (Spring Special 1974) is a useful and valuable issue,
containing "State of the Art: The Bamboo Renaissance" by Don Zahner, a survey of American cane rod builders active at the time. Individuals and
companies covered included Garrison, Leonard, Orvis, Payne, Powell, Sisty, T&T, Winston, Young, Howells and Uslan. In addition, Hoagy B. Carmichael
contributed an article titled "The Garrison Rod."
Quashnet's Paul H. Young Rod Database has photos and descriptions of over
390 PHY Co. rods, plus catalogs, accessories, etc. Thank you to all
who continue to send me PHY rod photos and info.

The present market tough, but I think Vol.1 #1 would be worth somewhere in the $100-200 range. Vol. 1 #2 is much harder to find, but normally sells for a
little less. I'm hanging on to mine.

Thank you, both.
Quashnet: Just finished reading the very issue you cite. Informative and entertaining. Looking forward to going through more of the early issues. |

The market on Fly Fisherman magazines looks to have dried up for some reason. Last month I took two boxes of them to Langs to try to sell for our TU chapter.
They ran from the mid 70's to the late 90's. I sold 4 copies for $3.50 and couldn't give the rest away for free to the book dealers that were
there, so now I'm giving them away for free to our members . I want them OUT of my work shop.
Its true that the very early copies have a worth, but what that would be I have no idea in todays market. I have a complete run of same, from vol.1, #1 to date and with the 3 way index that was done on the first 18 years they make a great reference. However that many magazines, in binders, takes up a lot of space. As others on the board have pointed out, the magazine isn't as good as it once was and I think their right. As to the board member that found a box of the early issues, I'd hang onto them and read them, you may find them of interest and you can always sell them later if you want. The first 12 issues should always have some value. Bruce |

By the way, I have spare copies of vol.#1, 3, 4 and 6 should anyone need them to fill out a set.

Regarding "The Bamboo Renaissance" article, several years ago, I contacted the magazine and they sent me that issue and an e-mailed permission to copy it and forward it to others interested in it. Thus, I made some color scans as *pdf files of the article. Because of the size of the "complete" color scan, when I've tried to e-mail it as
one file, some ISP / e-mail systems returned the file as being too large. So, I made three, smaller files of the article, so when sent separately, have been
able to get through .... should anyone be interested.
PS - I forgot to mention that if anyone wants a copy, please send me a regular e-mail with your name.... I'll add you to my e-mail contact list and can then send the files to you. Thanks. E-mail: Robert dot OL at sbcglobal dot net

other "must have" from other magazines | #9

I have a magazine/story about the departure of Glen Brackett from the R.L Winston Rod Company. This is an article from Fish & Fly magazine, Volume 7,
number 1, dated Autumn 2006, titled Last Cast. It's a very good interview of Glen Brackett of what happened, and why he walked out the door after 30
years. Several nice photos too. Any one interested, I'll send to them.

BruceHandley wrote: My collection (around 25 years or so) of FFman, got them for a dime apiece at a supermarket charity book space, begins at Volume 3, Issue 4, so any issues before that would be appreciated, especially Volume 1, Issue 5, 2/70 with the "Nymphing on the Roaring Fork" by Chuck Fothergill. He taught me to fly fish on the Roaring Fork back in 1977. I remember him using Hare's Ears and watching him and Georges Odier, who worked in his fly shop in Aspen, casting 5 twistons no sweat in some Spring fishing on the RF where the New Snowmass turnoff of Hwy 82 is. I also remember, on one of the fishing outings, pointing to a rock in the Fork near Basalt and saying, "There's a 14" rainbow up and to the right of that rock." He cast once above the rock and caught a 14" rainbow. No kidding... |

Old Flyfisherman Mags | #13
|
I have two sets of mint Fly Fisherman Magazines from the first issue and I could not give them away. I put the mint first issue of Fly Fisherman on Ebay a few
years ago and did not have one bid. You would think that they would be collect able but for some reason there is zero interest. For me the best issues of Fly
Fisherman were the first two years.

Did FFM report on the closing of Leonard? If so, does anyone recall the gist of it? (Can't find my mid-80s FFMs.) |

Leonard Closing | #15 | ||
|
Hi Bob I have all the fly fisherman mags from the time of the Leonard Closing but I have no memory of the magazine mentioning that. But that doesn't mean
anything because I have no memory period. I will go through my old issues to find out.
Still cannot believe how there is so little value to the first copy of fly fisherman. The best fly fisherman mags were the first two years. So many great 's contributed to the magazine. It has been a garbage magazine for years.
