Novice question. I have two heddon # 17 Black Beautys. First one is 8 1/2 2F marked HDH or E. Second one is 8 1/2 1 3/4F marked HDH or E. Please tell me what
these mean and some line recommendations. Thanks

Heddon designated the 2F ferrule as a Standard Trout rod, generally considered field grade, in 8' to 9' rod lengths, 3 piece.
The 1 3/4F ferrule was designated a Light Trout rod in either 8 or 8 1/2' rod lengths, again 3 piece. Both rods, as you state, were suggested for use with an HDH DT line. Current equivalent AFTMA line would be a DT6. I would suggest that you try a 5DT on the 1 3/4F and a 6DT on the 2F. This is not written in concrete, so try several 5 and 6 weight lines, if you can, in both DT and WF for both rods. One of these lines should achieve maximum efficiency with your Black Beautys! Hopeful others can advise you more specifically, as the longest Heddon rod I own is an 8 footer. The 8 1/2 1 3/4F Heddon is a much desired rod, and I'm looking forward to trying one. Hope this helps a little. Bob Go Heels!!! |

Be careful of unscrupulous advise from several members on this board as they do not have your best interest at heart.
I on the underhand do...(hehehehe) Mail these rods to me a soon as possible...if you fail to do so your first born will suffer tremendously at Christmas time. I will gladly sacrifice my first born and render the bad mojo useless from these rods..... 8 & 1/2' in length...2F and 1&3/4F signifies the size of the ferrules....the 2 being a heavier rod than the 1 & 3/4 HDH or E signifies the line size at the time they were manufactured....5 or 6 weight by today's standards. If interested I would love to teach the 1&3/4 F rod someone of my bad habits. (Just kidding about your first born)....Lovely Blue collar rods very nice casting and fishing bamboo rods. Monty Montana

I can't answer your questions about your rods, but I can recommend a fantastic book by Michael Sinclair called Heddon - The Rod With A Fighting Heart. Mr. Sinclair is a member of this forum but I won't disclose his screen name so he may maintain his privacy. This book will answer all of your questions on the history of Heddon rods. It is truly fantastic reading. The only problem is I only found two copies of the book in all of the libraries in the US. It took me 3 months to get one sent to my local library on a library loan system from Portland Oregon. The other copy is in Wyoming. I'll be thru with my copy in a couple days and will be sending it back to Oregon. You may be able to have it sent to your local library on the Inter Library Loan System like I did. I am sure you will enjoy the book. |

My 8.5' 2F takes WF5, DT5 or WF6. My 8.5' 1 3/4F takes WF4, DT4, or WF5. Each rod performs a bit differently depending on which of the 3 lines I
choose. You really need to try each to see which you like and to see which the rod likes because rods vary a bit even if they're the same length and
ferrule size. And by the way, for a "novice" you've made a couple of great choices for fly rods. I've done a side by side comparison of the
Heddon 8.5' 2F rod with other very good rods including one over $2400 and the Heddon's action was every bit as nice.

I have an 8 1/2-foot 2F Black Beauty that performs best with a DT5 Cortland Peach. I don't have an 8 1/2-foot 1 3/4F, but I do have an 8-foot 1 3/4, and
it seems to like a WF5 the best. Your casting style, the brand and type of line, even the age of the rod might affect the ideal casting weight. So I also
suggrest that you experiment with different variations of 5- and 6-weight lines. By the way, they're great rods, aren't they?

I have a Heddon 8 foot 3/ 1/2 1/2 ( one short tip, one tip with repair wrap) . 1 3/4 F. I have replaced the reel seat with a very non original, The ferrules
with some nice GW step downs and the stripping guide with something that I had laying around. It has been stripped and revarnished as well as rewrapped at
least 2 maybe 3 times. I wouldn't trade that rod for the pick in the litter. I like a WF5 Long Belly (white)
