Honing guide question |
Lead | ||
|
I have the following honing guide http://www.woodcraft.com/...D=03A21&FamilyID=3114 , and want to sharpen a
block plane blade to 35 degrees. However, the instructions only give settings for 25 and 30 degrees. Does anyone know how far the blade should extend to be
able to sharpen to 35 degrees. Thanks.

RJD,
I'll go out on a limb here. I have that same jig. I don't care for it. The reason being is that the roller is way too narrow for good lateral control. That's very important. Set it aside and go buy yourself the newer Veritas jig that will have a much wider and therefore more stable roller. Sorry but at present I can't answer your posted question as I 'm a bit "gimped up" to experiment! Jeremy. |

Try a protractor.
That guide does tend to "round over" the cutting edge. |

I'll add my vote to the last model Veritas honing guide. Pricey but worth every cent.

Make a graph with the distance the iron is extended on the y axis and the degrees on the x axis. Put a mark at 25 and 30 and draw a line between the two. Move
on out to 35 move up to the line and put a mark then read on the y axis the amount of extension.
A quicker way that is more accurate is to just calculate the distance. fishbum |

That guide does not work well. I had big problems with it. The wheel is too narrow and can't keep the blade square enough. Get the Veritas MarkII, you
can set it to any angle you want, including 35 degrees, with the built in angle setter.
If there were only one mistake I could have a do-over on, it would be buying that jig, it took a while to figure out it was causing me trouble planing. -John

I have the Veritas Mark II and think it is great. I now use a Worksharp 3000 but still use the Mark II from time to time if I need to get an angle that the
Worksharp can't.

Does anyone remember, and even more importantly know where to buy, a guide, that was grey in color, make of plastic, had the name GENERAL on it,( I think ) you
could set the angle anywhere, and the wheel stayed off the stone.
Any help out there? Thanks in advance. Art |

gmreeves,
How is the Worksharp working out? Any suggestions on its use or performance. Have you used the leather honing wheel with it. I may be getting one in a couple of weeks from that jolly ole guy. RJ, I would recommend the veritas Mark II. It does a very good job.

I just got to thinking... | #11 | ||
aparramoure wrote: Art, On that type of jig, it would seem to me that in order for accuracy then those two surfaces, the one the jig's rollers are on and the top surface of your sharpening stone...they'd need to be 100% parallel to each other..ya?? Otherwise you're out'a kilter... You're more experienced than I am so I'd like to know, if you catch this. Jeremy. edit...Now I'm thinking you'd be pressing more into the blade where it contacts the stone so this post may be void??
