You can buy ebonite here, http://www.homerubber.com/cylinder_rubber.html It is a low quality, you will not find high grade ebonite
in the US.

Your expertise in ebonite and its availability is of great interest to us over here. Have you tested samples from all sources? What is the hardness factor of the European ebonite? Where would you advise seeking ebonite in Europe? Or, can you presently supply high quality Euopean ebonite? |

quality ebonite is still used in
stems. i know that it came in sheets that would have been suitable for reel sideplates. kind of lost track of where to
buy pipemaking supplies and most of them use preformed stems but there are still some of the makers cutting their own. Pimco comes to mind as one of the
suppliers but you could also contact one of the high end custom makers and see if they know where to start.

I finally feel useful in this forum...sort of. :-)
I am new to bamboo rod making from pipe making. I hand cut all of my stems from high-quality ebonite that I imported from Germany, so I have little credit in this course. There are now two factories that I know of that make ebonite of sufficiently high quality to be used to hand cut into high-end pipe stems. Unfortunately, neither is currently producing sheets to the best of my knowledge. It is all rods. (Sheets would be of value to a pipe maker too, and there are a few of the "old guys" that a have a prized stash of sheet ebonite.) Having said that, at least one of the factories make rods of diameter that would be sufficient for a reel face, but it is EXPENSIVE. Additionally, they have minimum order requirements that are prohibitive for most one man operations. One of the two German factories is relatively new, and has been somewhat responsive to the needs of pipe makers. Here is their website: http://www.sem-hitzacker.de/ . If I was in need of some non-standard ebonite, I would contact those guys and try to see if they would make it for me. I would try to convince them that there was a market they were missing out on. As for sources in the US for ebonite rod suitable for pipe stems (i.e. 3/4"-7/8" diameter) try http://www.pipemakers.org . I hope that helps. Tyler |

Fred Balling has ebonite sheet. At least he did when I ordered it off this site a couple of weeks ago. He shipped it immediately, and it arrived undamaged.
Service excellent, product as advertised. Other posts on this thread have directed everyone elsewhere. Curious. Fred has a website,
www.PerfectionFlyReel.blogspot.com where he has ordering info. Seems his prices are quite fair when compared to pipe stem material, based on cubic
inches/dollar. I found him on this Forum. Very pleasant to work with. Hope this helps.

Hello! We are looking forward to seeing pics of that "undamaged" stuff that you received so conveniently! Please share your experience here ! How did
that stuff behave on your lathe? Good luck to you!

Hi Wolfhard,
Happy to take a picture of it for you. It looks like a thick, black 12" square tile. But happy to take a picture of it. I have shared my experience here all ready. Not sure what you're getting at? When I get around to putting it in the lathe, I'll share that experience with you as well. I'm a little lost as to the gist of this whole thread. Thought people wanted a source of ebonite. I got mine from Fred. Regards, Chris |

Chris and others, thanks for all the info. I believe those seeking ebonite may have some options now, or at least a place to start from.
