I came across, what I thought was a pretty good deal, on a Orvis Madison 3wt. Rod is new, never fished with the wrapper still on rod tube. Soooo not like
me, I purchased it without much investigation and now I learn I waaaayyy over paid. I have several Winston rods, to include a TMF and a 3wt Retro and I was
told the Madison is close to the same action. With this said, I more so jumped on the deal since I love the action on the TMF & Retro, more so the Retro.
Like so many of us, I always wanted a Bamboo rod. In my case, my first purchase was a flop. The funny thing is, the seller, really thought I was getting a
great deal, they say the rod retailed for $1,200.00 It kinda takes the love & SOUL of out using this rod.
I don't want to so weird but I always dreamed of finding an old bamboo rod in the rafter's at a garage sale which was once owned by a older gentleman
who could no longer use it. Take it down, pull it out of the sock, dust it off and let it begin a new chapter. Well, just a dream which I will continue to
live.

Welcome to the board. Do not sweat it. The best way to get over it is to fish the rod hard. We, or at least I have done the same thing. You will not remember the cost when there is a brook trout on the line. John |

John couldn't be more right. Over the course of your life it's relatively little money and you'll soon forget it. You also have a Madison 7/3,
which is a somewhat scarce model in the best possible condition.
The thing about Orvis rods is that unknowledgable sellers go to the Orvis website, see the cost of a new rods and assume that decent used ones have a similar value. I see it constantly. For what it's worth, try fishing it with #16-#18 dry flies--especially the latter--on leaders no longer than 9 feet. Although it was intended for midging with tiny flies, I find it more comfortable and accurate with more wind-resistant flies. |

Fish it hard for 20 years, then amortize the cost. It will only be abour $4.50 per month to own it. Not a bad deal.

Thanks for the quick replies, they certainly picked me up.
I have a certain place where I plan on using this little rod. Fished this spot several times, never did much, but that does not mean there is nothing holding. It's one of those spots that does not get much pressure, a bit hard to get to, lot's of overhanging bushes, just a perfect spot to float a dry. Heck, I just realized, not once while typing this did I think of how much I paid. I was really down on this purchase but just maybe, this rod holds a great future. Thank you! |

Or perhaps dollar cost averaging. If you buy enough of these things you loose track of the cost and dollars and averages. Ya gotta pay yer dues. This experience could open vistas never imagined by most anglers. Don't count the dollars, count the opportunities. |

I agree with tedgolden. Purchase lots of rods and average the cost. Some you may pay too much for and others feel like a steal (which we never get upset
about). On average, not a bad deal for a closet full of fly rods.

Red..I sounds like you have a great rod ...I am pretty sure when you are creeping up on that spot you mentioned working your self to the stream edge your
heart will be beating hard in your chest... You tie on a size 16 Adams and flip it up to the top of a nice little pool, as a nice little trout comes up and
hits it with a splashy take...you will never remeber what the rod cost...

Redfish, I couldn't agree more with the posts above. I'm sure you'll never look back. I paid more for a particular rod than I should have a few
years ago, also for a fairly uncommon Orvis by the way. It was hard to find, I wanted one, and that was that. I love it and fish it wherever and whenever the
conditions fit. Zero regrets, and very rarely zero fish--see how it works out?

Update on my new purchase. I called Orvis and gave them the serial # to find out when the rod was built. Per Orvis, rod was built by Ron White in May of 1988.
I must say, I certainly feel much better after all the responses. Thank you everyone! Happy Holiday's |

Well the rod is almost brand new! A 20 year old orvis is just a baby.

A Orvis Madison 7/3 is a great little rod, You said the seller stated it retailed afor $1200.00, you didn't tell us what you paid for the rod. Now you have my curiosity going, No Matter, like everyone has said "we have all paid to much for a rod" I know I have. The pain will subside and you will enjoy the rod. True, cost averaging is the only way to go. So buy a bunch of nice rods and you will feel much better. I have 10 Orvis rods and I am sure I paid to much for 9 of them. $700 may be a little too much for the Madison Grade of this rod but it is a scarce model and I don't have one but would like one for my collection.
I pay for condition, condition, condition and for one unused with warrenty in the tube why not! I never then look back after my purchase. It's a great little rod, made a by a great rod maker, Ron White! Use it and have fun! Orvis will also make you another tip for it if so inclined, something i have done for a few Orvis Rods. Short story about how I have three tips for a Battenkill. Rod sold on Ebay as single tip. Purchased rod and told seller if they ever find the other tip it was worth $50 + shipping to me. Waited and after 6 months or so sent rod to Orvis for another tip. Rod finally back from Orvis with a second tip and seller emails and says did i still want the other tip? Well for $50 + shipping, sure. So three tips now! Hope you enjoy the story.-Dick |
