One of the things I like about this site is the opportunity to see what's inside different reels. So many ways to get the same job done....and I've
enjoyed peeking inside everyone else's toys. I don't think anyone's posted pics of the inside of a Zwarg before, though. So here goes. This is a
#300/Saguenay single action Zwarg in size 2/0. It has the K prefex on the serial number, indicating it's very late production...ca.1956 or so.

Beautiful, and thanks for posting the pics
Is the 2/0 a 3 3/8th diameter? Also, do you happen to have a postal scale to get a weight......I've never been one to really care how a reel balances a rod, but I would be curious to know what this one weighs in at. Mark B |

Beautiful reel. Thank you for sharing.
Does anyone know what the Hardy Cascapedia Reproduction 1/0 and 4/0 reels look like inside? The original 1930s Cascapedia reels had a drag mechanism similar, if not identical to the EVH, Zwarg and Walker salmon reels. I was told the Reproduction reels are different inside. Rick |

The reel's specs:
weight---11.1 oz outside reel diameter---3 3/8" outside reel width---2" outside contracted spool diameter---2 7/8" outside contracted spool width---1 1/4" I'm glad you all enjoy seeing it. I've had it for over 30 years, used it maybe 30 days in all that time, and this is only the second time I've opened it up. The screw heads have very finely tapered slots, so it's a bit tricky to mess with. The pawl/gear mechanism is really just a noise maker...switched on and off by sliding the knurlled button on the front plate. The real drag is the leaf spring with 2 leather pads mounted on the back plate. It applies preasure to the outside surface of one spool side and is controlled by the logoed knob on the back plate. At max preasure the drag is pretty impressive. Strong enough to stop a pickup truck and very smooth. That logoed knob on the back plate also twists open to allow oiling the backside of the reel's interior. Oiling the front side of the interior is made possible by reverse winding the S handle and removing it. Both are pretty handy for service when one wouldn't dare open up the whole reel. |

zwarg kit | #7 | ||
|
hi all,
friend of mine built his zwarg, a #3/0 model 400, from a "kit":
yes, he did manage to put it together again; in fact he did it several times (dismantle and put together again, that is) before it ran nicely. brake is working too (#3/0 is reel on the left):
it also does what it's supposed to do:

There's got to be a good story behind that 3/0 built from a kit. I'd love to hear it...

Hardy Cascapedia 1/0 and 4/0 Reproduction Reels | #10 | ||
|
The Sunbeam is a gear and pawl reel, as I believe the early vintage Sunbeam reel is as well. The Cascapedia and Brunswick Reproduction reels have a
significant drag mechanism in them. I have heard that the reels are similar inside to the original 1930s Cascapedias (EVH drag design), yet I have also heard
they are nothing like the originals internally. The check mechanism on the 4/0 is not designed for line tension or overrun purposes as is on Saracione Salmon
reels, but is simply there for noise as is provided on offshore conventional reels.
I look forward to hearing from those who may have seen the internal designs of these limited Hardy reels. Rick |

Christian -
You're killing us with the suspense......please.....how did your friend come to own a Zwarg that had never been assembled ......or had it been originally purchased as a completed reel from the Zwarg shop and then someone took it apart and never got it back together? I would imagine there would have been left over parts when the shop closed and it's very possible that whoever bought the contents could have pieced together the parts to sell "kits"......I've certainly heard of more unusual things.... Remember....we are reel nuts and this kind of thing is interesting......at least to me.......but I am admittedly defective
Thank you in advance for any additional information you can provide.... Mark B |

Of course, Brian, and you'll be delighted to know that the reel is easily converted to a shortwave radio for slow moments on stream. Just bring your Swiss

My suspicion is that it was disassembled to avoid VAT and duties inbound to Germany. I bought a mint Seamaster first model tarpon reel from a fellow in
Dusseldorf years ago and he insured it for about $100 to avoid a whopping tax when he shipped it to me.

sorry to disapoint you all, but there is no story. I must confess, that I was just pulling your leg with the "kit" bit.
as my friend actualy fishes all his reels, they are all completely dismantled on arrival. 50 year old grease put into the reel by otto zwarg himself may be of historical value, but if it keeps the reel from functioning as intended, it needs to go:
after a thorough cleaning, including a session in an ultrasonic cleaning device (originaly for jewelery), every part is polished and lubed. the reels are then put together and the brake mechanism is fine-tuned, which may require disasembling again, and so forth; you get the picture. the worst case I've ever seen was this trout-sized bogdan (before pic):
it didn't turn, nor click with all the old grease in there. looks much better that way, doesn't it?! (after pic):
I wish you all a merry christmas and a new season with loads of sreeming reels. best from krautland, christian

Thanks for the explanation. It really is a good story. And thanks for the pics of the inside of a Zwarg multiplier.
If dating your friend's reels is a matter of interest to him, one of us with a copy of A J Campbell's book can help by knowing the letter prefix of the serial number. The serial number is the one stamped on the front edge of the footplate. |
