I need some advice on bamboo fly rods.
I started out fishing graphite rods, have, for the most part, moved on to glass rods; including some vintage glass rods, but can feel myself gravitating slowly towards a bamboo rod; probably primarily because of the visual and aesthetic characteristics of the rods themselves, as well as the rich American history that surrounds them. Before I do that, I wanted to get some advice as to the best way to approach getting into cane rods.
I fish trout; mostly in the small freestone streams up here in the Northeastern PA area. The terrain is, generally, moderate to steep gradient pocket water with some gentler gradient riffles, runs and pools. The fish are usually in the 8-18" size range (brookies, browns and rainbows); with the vast majority being 15" or less. I usually fish dry flies; although small nymphs and small terrestrials also take up a considerable amount of space in my fly boxes. In terms of rods, I prefer a faster action blank and enjoy casting long whenever the opportunity arises. But my primary focus now is shifting to a gentle and precise presentation. My current rod of choice for these environs is a 7'-7'6" in either a 3wt (graphite) or a 3-4 wt. (glass).
I'm looking to purchase my first bamboo rod for this type of fishing and, since this will be an experiment of sorts for me, I'd like to do it at a reasonable price. I do realize that you get what you pay for, but I also recognize that I'm a beginner when it comes to fishing cane rods and, so, want to find out if I like bamboo rods before I move into the finer points of exactly which bamboo rod(s) are best suited for me.
I would appreciate any recommendations that you could provide as to the best way to get into fishing bamboo rods.
Thanks in advance.
