If anyone is willing to share the taper for the 8' Orvis Nymph I'd like to use it on my first rod that I'm starting to build now. Thanks!

OK, this has got to be one of the most "love it or hate it" rods out there... I cast a friends Orvis Nymph last week and it was amazing how well it
cast on the mid-small NC stream we fished. He was fishing the nymph and I was fishing the "nymph" taper on my midge/nymph. I like my rod, but the
8' Nymph had a little more backbone for rollcasting. Say what you will about this taper (quoted as the 2nd worst Orvis taper on this board) , but a really
slow rod like the nymph will allow you to land big fish on 6X w/o a problem. Out of 11 fish landed, all but one was over 18' with just one break-off all
day.
If anyone is willing to share the taper for the 8' Orvis Nymph I'd like to use it on my first rod that I'm starting to build now. Thanks! |

That's exactly what the rod is best at - fishing nymphs and cushioning light tippets. Its not a very versatile rod and IMO an OK rod to have in one's
collecion (like the 7/3), only a bit sloppy feeling on all but the most ideal conditions....

Moderators what are the rules here? | #2
|
Does this fall into the category of not discussing tapers by makers that are alive or still making rods?
Does the nymph, which isn't made by Orvis any more, count as something that should be forbidden to discuss online or is it fair game? Just trying to clarify the rules, moderators care to weigh in on this one? |

BigTJ wrote: TJ - I thought about that and reasoned that since #1, Orvis is not making the rod and #2, I think it was a developed by Ron White (correct me if I'm wrong) who is not making rods (not sure if he's still alive), I figured it would be OK to ask. Given the popularity of this taper (blatant sarcasm) I doubt the Orvis will be marketing it again. |

If you want the basic taper its real close to the Leonard 39 in David Ray's Taper Library. I mic'd mine a couple years ago to try and find out what it
was most like and it almost fit the Leonard to a tee. I would probably add a little over 10 thou to the zero station. I love my Orvis 8', 3/4 wt, but
everbody's comments on how slow it is are right on the money. I can say that one of the problems you might have is in how Orvis impreg'd theirs, had a
lot to do with how resistant to sets and how strong this rod is, as it comes from Orvis. I think if I were going to copy this rod, I would be sure to glue up
with Epon and impreg with something like Spar Urethane to insure proper support and resistance to sets.

I've blocked the post which contained the taper for the Orvis Nymph. This does go against the rule for posting tapers of living (read active) rod makers. Just because the taper isn't currently available doesn't mean that the maker may or may not re-introduce the taper at a later date. Orvis is still the original maker, and as they are still in business, this rod does not fit into the definition of a classic taper from a maker that is not around any more, or a taper by a current maker who has given permission to post it here. Titelines wrote:No problem Mark, I understand the rules a little better now, but one clarification. My understanding is that this would apply to any classic company that has liscenced it's name as well, correct? That would mean if the name is still in commercial use, then the taper should not be posted without explicit permission. Thanks for the advice on the build Canewrap, I was planning to impregnate with Mike's sauce or one of the similar variations. I was also going to try a slightly swelled butt on it. |

Glassfisher, That falls into more of a gray area than with the Orvis tapers. Many if not most or all, of those "classic" companies stopped producing rods completely, and for all intents and purposes, went out of business. Orvis, on the other hand, has remained in continuous operation, and has never shut down production. I also understand that taper databases such as RodDNA have Orvis tapers listed, but they are not this forum, with the rules that we have. Those classic tapers that are in production today, and are posted on this forum, may or may not get us in trouble. That's entirely up to the companies that have been resurrected and are currently in business. If they wish to pursue their ownership of those tapers, they are entirely within their rights to do so. Why are/were these allowed to fly as well as others if you do a search.

Posting Orvis Tapers | #11
|
When I posted the thread on 7/14/08 requesting the taper of the Orvis 7/4 I did not know it was against the forum's policies not to post such Tapers. I had
not been on the site for some time and was just starting back building rods. Not to step on any toe's it wont happen again. As for the guy wanting the
taper of the Orvis Nymph, he could always mic his friends rod.
