I'm doing this for a friend who sent me the pics. Marked Wm Mills & Son New York on backplate. He is interested in the manufacturer and also would
appreciate a ballpark value. Thanks a bunch!

Nice Dingley from likely the WWI era....
I have a 3 inch cousin to this reel that in addition to Wm Mills & Son New York, is stamped below that No. 2 Value is going to be dependent on size (I can't tell if it's a 3 inch or 3.5 inch) and who's looking when you sell...the foot hurts a bit to.....I know there are a few people lined up for mine when it's time to move it. I am not really up on current Dingley values, but Patt or Richard will likely chime in...and try to buy it Mark B |

My mistake...the No 2 is above the Wm Mills on mine, the latch and everything else appears to be the same.

Nice reel. The value of these caged Dingleys seems to go up & down like the tide. Pristine, they've sold for far more than $300--but that's when
the dia is 3" & finish is 95%+. Lately there have been several with clean reel feet & small dia w/ 90% finish that have sold for $180-220 on that
unnameable auction site. I'd say 4 or 5 of these caged examples have sold in the last 2 months in that range. Perhaps as a reflection of the current
economy, a very sweet 3 1/2" older example sold early last week for $107.
As Mark knows, I give Dingleys w/ the Mills markings an extra value, but that may not be founded in any reality as they appear infrequently, so there's no established market value for them. This particular reel, w/ the banged up foot, is a sub-$200 specimen IMHO. Value will be driven also by the diameter--the smaller, the more expensive (yes, I know, inexplicable... when they were originally sold, the small reels were cheap & the big ones expensive).

Mark, doesn't your Mills have seven spokes? I just noticed that this one is a 6-spoker.

There was an earlier discussion with a ten pin and a seven pin. One with a horseshoe latch, the other with a telephone.

Charlie - I had forgotten about that thread with the 7 and the 10 pin reels....
Pat - I hadn't noticed that the reel Troutist posted was 6 pin.......my little Wm Mills is actually an 8 pin...I also just noticed that the pins/spokes on mine are on the raised part of the face while Troutist's friend's reel they are on the recessed part of the face.

paul , your reel is a mr walter dingley , the value on these reel can range wide , it depends on the condition and finish left on the reel and on yours the condition is not the best , the reel needs some TLC and a good cleaning , another big part of the value is the size , if your reel is like 3 inch then it for sure is worth more , from your pricture and looking at the reels foot i'm pretty sure it's a 3 1/2 size or even maybe bigger , from the dingleys i have seen when they get down to the smaller size the foot is the solid flat one post with the 2 screws to the frame as yours has the 2 post with 2 screws to the frame on a good note your reel has not been worked over from what i can see , i have always like these brass rod caged spool dingleys , one nice thing about these reels is they are so easy to make it a LHW without haveing to change anything on the reel ,just by adjusting the spring , i have done lots that have ended up going to LHW guys who use the reel and never have any troubles , also when these reels are cleaned up they look so darn good value to me = mint 3 inch $450 and up if it has a good '''dingley stamp''' or a retailer stamp , i sold one that was as new , like it just came from the box and i got $500 for it , and from there the price will go down , i'd say your reel is still a $250 reel the way it is and if you clean it and fix the foot you could get maybe $300 as it has a nice retailer stamp on the backside

Mark, excellent observation. Also the handle on your Mills appears to be fatter, and a deeper ivory yellow.
What an amazing variety in these caged reels. Experimentation? And Rich, you are forever the optimist about these prices. Unfortunately, recent values are not anywhere near what you're quoting, though the caged reels that have sold recently were not "as new." But, all were decent condition, and without the damage that shows up on the foot of the reel that started this post. |

Troutist's example also has an inscribed line on the outside edge of the recessed plate, a detail that none of the other examples seems to have.

But, all were decent condition, and without the damage that shows up on the foot of the reel that started this post.'''' i must be missing them then , the ones i have seen have mostly been with the same finish as his reel , only the sellers not showing the innards for people to look at to bid , i won't bid on a reel if i can't see what the insides look like , been burnt befor on that and won't happen to me again and alot of people won't buy from certain sellers anymore so i think thats why you see some going cheep , you will not see a 3 inch go for less then $250 i don't think , not if i'm watching and see it and it's in good condition , his reel has the nice mills stamp on the backside , you don't see it often , the foot is bent , no big deal as it's a 20 min fix and it will look good after , i'm only saying that for a top price the reel needs to be mint , and when they are not then the price will go down , i still think it's worth $250 with the stamp on the backside , and if he cleaned it good and fixed the foot he ''might'' get $300 , still not sure of the size , i have yet to see a dingley with that stamp on it sell for less then $200 , i'd gladly in a heartbeat give dder $250 for any one of his 3 reels pictured , i won't even ask him as that would be a insult , and i would really gladly give you pat $250 for that little 3 inch dingley i just sent you on the trade for the red agate dingley from you , any time , any day , maybe the turtledoc will bite and offer his mills #2 dingley to
me for $250 ''NOT'' just can't see him selling that reel for that price ,
to me these are what i call mint dingleys that are worth top prices as for the condition speaks it , i would not sell one of these for less then $400 and i'll buy as many as i can for $250
and to me the price should go up when you start adding the little extra's , like the strap over the tensioner or brass line guide , adding a red agate then that also drives the price up , and also depends on the stamp on the backside , if you have the reel with the dingley stamp then it's worth more i think more then anything it has to be the condition of the reel overall , it's getting harder and harder to find these ol dingleys in mint condition anymore , i think i'm going to start collecting bench made classic reels from all these great new reel builders , thems nice reels and alot of new builders coming on line , get in befor they
hit the big times and there reels start going for a couple grand

Hey, thanks all, for the info on the reel! I asking him for a pic of inside and the diameter of reel, mechanical condition, etc. If its a smaller
one and mechanically sound, I might buy it; or, he wants a rare Meisselbach thumb bar for a baitcaster I have and it could be partial trade. Anyway, I really
appreciate all the info. If he would have sent inside pic, I would have immediately known it was a Dingley with the D and number stamp.
