Mine's changed a bunch so I'll try an update. No collectibles here, but all rods are to fish:
7' 3/2 3 wt. Brooks' permacane Leonard 3734 ACM - a wonderful small stream rod 7'3" 2/2 4 wt. Wagner Patriot in less-seen 2 tip format - a great casting strong 4 wt. that I just can't get the right conditions to fish enough; on potentially right streams I end up picking up the 7' 3 wt. or the 7'6" or 7'9" rods. Probably the next rod to go because not used enough, but a truly wonderful taper. 7'6" 2/2 4/5 wt. - my only rod that I built, with George Maurer's help, on his Old Philosopher taper. Strong rod that really likes the 5 wt. line. A rod I love, but obvious bias. 7'9" 3/2 4 wt. built by Phil Horowitz on a Brooks blank - casts a 4 incredibly. 8' 2/2 4 wt. Orvis Nymph - a very slow rod recently picked up - I actually think it's going to be a lot of fun 8'6" 3/2 4/5 wt. bamboo-ferruled HB by Bill Carter- just picked it up, but can't wait to get it on the water. 7' 3/2 5 wt(listed as a 4) Maurer 48 Special - In a rare 3 pc. format for this taper,I bought this rod used because of my special feelings about George - I also believe it was one of George's personal rods. Not a configuration I use, but a strong rod that needs the increased line wt. 7'9" 2/2 5 wt. hollow-built Chris Raine/Dunsmuir Rod Co. built on a Payne Parabolic taper variation- a light but fastish, powerful rod - beautiful finish too. 8' 2/2 5 wt. Fultz rod- a sentimental favorite, as it was my first rod, and I try to take it out at least 1x per season. 8' 4/2 5 wt. Dennis Stone pack rod I think off a Thomas taper - full-flexing nice boo pack rod 8' 3/2 5 wt. AJ Thramer hollowbuilt Western Trout taper - an incredible strong all-round do anything rod 8' 2/2 5 wt. Brooks' Permacane McKenzie NW with olive intermediates - just received yesterday but feels like a nice all-round rod with fine tips and still strong rod that will be nice when an impreg. rod just feels safe-plus, a very pretty rod. 8' 2/2 6 wt. Orvis Battenkill (1958) 4 1/4 oz. that's a fun early season rod when slinging heavier stuff I also used a bunch of fiberglass this past year, especially a wonderful 8'3" 3 pc. 5 wt. McFarland. The 7' 3/2 3 wt. Brooks, 7'9" 3/2 4 wt. Horowitz/Brooks, and AJ's 8' 3/2 HB 5 wt. go with me on every distance trip (my wife's family is in CO and my middle son lives in OR). The 7'9" 4 wt. and AJ's 5 wt. got most of the use this year. I keep saying I'm done, and the fever takes over - Am excited about a soon-to-be-delivered Mike Shay 8' 2/2 4 wt. - I'm anticipating a really great taper by Mike. I think 8' 4 wts. are really hard to nail and this sounds like it'll be really nice. Can't wait! Regards, Steve

Revised Collection | #327

I have sold some rods in my absence from this wonderful sight. I have been into guns (what with the new regime about to take power being less than friendly to
guns and their owners) more lately and haven't been able to spend as much time standing around waving
a stick.
Goodwin Granger GF9050 Slide Band Goodwin Granger GS8642 Slide Band W&M Granger GC8642 Slide Band W&M Granger GV8040 W&M Granger GF8040 8'-6" Leonard Tournament 8'-0" Leonard 7'-0" Orvis Battenkill 8'-0" Orvis Battenkill 8'-0" Lyon & Colson (Heddon #17) 8'-6" Heddon #10 7'-9" H&I Tonaka Queen 8'-0" Herters 8'-6" SouthBend #57 8'-6" SouthBend #? Broken 7'-6" Legacy John Bradford There may be more as this is from memory at work.
The two rods I use the most are my GV8040 and my 8' Orvis. Individual Rod makers I would buy from in the future are Bradford, Thramer and of course Granger, Orvis & Heddon are always in the mix.
The trout takes the fly, the line tightens and it's like I was blind, but now I
see.

All my current rods are old ones. They reflect the larger waters I tend to fish (Montana). I'm toying with the idea of selling a shotgun, which I arguably
have an excess of right now (I'm not interested in any weapons the new regime could plausibly be concerned with), and splurging on a new, modern rod.
Here's the current list:
Goodwin Granger Victory 9050 (refinished by Gary Lacey) Goodwin Granger Special 9050 (refinished by me) Goodwin Granger Champion 8642 (refinished by me) Wright & McGill Stream and Lake 8642 (much heavier tip than my other 8642s) 8 1/2-foot DeBell "Kibby Gart Perfected" (Granger 8642 taper) Wright & McGill Granger Special 9053 Goodwin Granger 9053 (refinished by Dave Delekta) South Bend 9' 323 (reconditioned by me) Heddon #20 9' 2 1/2 F Heddon #14 9' 2 1/2 F Heddon #20 9' 3F And my new favorite (despite the mishap documented in my avatar): Heddon Black Beauty 8 1/2' 2F (refinished by me). It has become very hard to fish with anything else). |

Now that Cheney is leaving office, fly fishermen no longer have a voice in the white house and I heard they intend to pass laws making any fly rod over 5'
illegal. Remember: if rods are illegal - only poachers will have rods!!!

This is my current list of bamboo which seems to change regularly although some here will be with me permanently. You might not guess from the number of rods,
but I don't view myself as a collector but just trying to experience many different rods to become more knowledgeable in the long run. Eventually I will
pare down to maybe a dozen or so.

Thanks bobbeegee.
The T&T is a 1978 Special Trouter. 6 1/2' 3/4 wt. Built on a impregnated blank from Sharps, as I found out from the folks at T&T and this forum. It has the great finish work of T&T. In an old Flyfisherman magazine from1978 there is an ad for these rods $198.00! |

I bought my first bamboo rod off the shelf from an old hardware store in Blacksburg VA back in 1977. Once I learned a few things I realized it was a japanese
import that had probably been on the rack for 15 years. I refinished it in red silks and fished the heck out of it. After a number of years I passed it on to a
friend and moved up to the world of Tonka Queens, South Bends, and similar mostly restoration projects. I do enjoy bringing old soldiers back to life. I am
currently about as up market as I expect to get with the following small collection of rods.
Goodwin Granger GS8040 (restored) Goodwin Granger GV9050 WM Granger GV8542 (restored) WM Granger GS9660 (restored) Orvis Battenkill 7'6" 3 7/8 oz Orvis Battenkil 8'6" 5 1/8 oz Paul R. Leonardtown MD. |

Time to add in my little collection to the list | #340
|
Dickerson 7613 - 1951 made originally for J. McKay (2/1 becoming 2/2- John Pickard is making me a second out of pre-embargo cane and original
Dickerson hardware (he recently bought Dickerson's shop from Jim Schaaf and got all of Lyle's materials - ferrules, guides, cane, etc.). (all original
except for the new tip section)
Dickerson 801510-D - 1937, 3/2 made originally for Samuel Meek, Greenwich, Conn., refinished impeccably Dickerson 8014 - 2009, 2/2 This may seem like an odd date since Lyle died in 1981, but therein lies the story. When John Pickard collected all of the materials from the Dickerson shop, he found some very interesting things, including a three-tip 8014, inked by the Master himself that was never quite finished out. John is presently completing the work began by Lyle over a quarter of a century ago, linking the original Master with his modern successor. It's was like finding a new work of Bach or Beethoven, the Master's last expression recently discovered. (all hybrid original) Granger Special 8642 - 3/3 (1 extra tip, 1 tip down 3"), all original Phillipson Preferred - 7' 2/2 for 5 wt., new grip and reel seat Mike Clark South Creek Limited - 7'9" 3/2 for 5 wt. made for me (all original, 1 tip down 3/4", a victim of extracting ice from the tip top on the Frying Pan River on a single digit Fahrenheit December day; replaced by Bob Widgren of Los Pinos Rods, Albuquerque). Mike Clark South Creek Limited - 7'9" 2/2 for 5 wt. made for me (all original) John Pickard 7625 - 7'6" 2/2 for 5 wt. (all original) Jack Howell - 7'6" 2/2 for DT-5 made for me (all original, plus refinished by Jack himself in 2003 since I used this rod almost exclusively for 8 years straight, including many 100 dgree plus days on the San Juan and several sub-freezing days on the Frying Pan. Many of you may have heard of Jack Howell; he wrote the book The Lovely Reed, back when he was living in Albuquerque. But likely most of you haven't had a chance to cast his rods. Should you ever get the chance, don't pass it up. His cane work and attention to detail is absolutely superior. There is the efficient, sparse quality to his finishings reminiscent of Garrison and Dickerson. This is his take on the 1952 Dickerson 7613 taper. Having since gotten a real 7613, I can say he gives up nothing to the Master in terms of a casting tool, and his detailed work, IMHO, is better.) Jack Howell - 7'9" 2/2 for DT-5, made originally for Scott Nichols; an extended length variant of the 1970 Dickerson 7613 taper, a little slower rod. (all original) Jack Howell Canadian Canoe - 8'6" 2/2 for DT-6/WF-7, Jack's take on the classic Payne brook trout lake fishing taper - casts a WF-7 like a canon (all original). (Living in Albuquerque gave me access to Jack's rods and I treasure them all.) R.A. Fick - 7'6" 2/2 for 5/6 wt. A moose of a rod with DT-5, like a Dickerson 7614 or 7615, a perfect drift boat rod for the Green River - can handle midges to hoppers. (all original) Doug Kullick Kane Klassic - 8'6" 3/2 for 6/7 (1 light, 1 heavy tip) (all original) Herter's RH8C - 8'0" 2/2 for 5/6 wt. (1 light, 1 heavy tip) (grip, reel seat replaced). This was the rod of a friend's grandfather in Ohio, given to me as a gift. Horrocks-Ibbotson Ike Walton - 8'6" 2/2 (all original, but being refinished by Bob Widgren of Los Pinos Rods in Albuquerque). This was my father's rod in New York in the 1940s/50s. So that's my modest little set. The Dickersons (especially the newly discovered 8014) and the Howells are the pride and joy of my collection, but they are all special in their own way. |
