Anyone know the history of these producers?
Just bought a couple of reels and I'm eager to learn.

they are beautiful, both made by JW Young
late 30s, but the reel on the bottom, especially, I believe is 1940. I would like to see inside if possible.

I'll second bulldog's comment and request. Great photographs by the way
Both dealers were around from early to mid 19th century until the 1960's and supplied reels by several manufacturers. A google search of either will reveal lots of info. |

thanks for additional photos. I can tell you that the John Forrest reel is a Young pattern 14a.
I do not know the Young pattern number on the Fosters reel, but I'll have to inform you that it has certainly been spray painted.

Thanks for the replies Bulldog,
The reels are not mint and shows wear and paintjobs but they look good and I'm going to use them so it doesn't mater so much, the reels is a great entry to an expensive insanity. |

those are just great reels , most young reels i have had or seen were painted from the factory , they are not leaded finish like the hardys , i have seen a few youngs that had the leaded finish look , that's another great thing about these young reels , tough as can be and they can be restored to as new and will last a life time , i have also seen them stripped with the finish all gone and looks like the spitfire finish , you have 2 wonderfull reels and they are harder to come by the smaller sizes , enjoy them , they also sound great when screaming

These are just great little reels. Beautiful to look at and wonderful in their timeless design. The spindles are adjustable to compensate for any end-play in
the spool that may have occcured over time. Here's a great thread written by Bulldog that spells out in detail how to adjust them; http://fiberglassflyrodders.yuku.com/topic/5550
You'll enjoy them as they fish very well and are just a lot of fun to use. Classy too, with those red agates set against the black! Greg

Daryl,
I believe you are seeing the knob for the optional check. Note on the inside of the frame where the cut-away shows next to the pawl. Dennis |
