SA GPX line-technical query |

Anyone use the SA GPX line on a medium(+) action cane rod? I have a Garrison 193 tapered rod that is just a little too quick for my tastes. The rod was made
with flamed PE cane that is very dense and may actually be a detriment in trying to arrive at the "right" feel in the finished rod. To compound the
problem, I used Recoil guides which seem to have a very low friction coefficient so the line just zips through the guides. Before I re-wrap the rod with
conventional snake guides, I thought I'd ask the question of whether or not a GPX line may help to slow the rod down. I have read that the front taper of a
GPX line is slightly larger and heavier for a given line weight. Any thoughts and experience with this sort of thing? Some rods require just the right line and
this appears to be one of them.

GPX lines are 1/2 size heavier than standard lines, they have a longer front-taper and a slightly over-sized tip.

I use a WF5 GPX line on my 8' 3/2 Orvis Battenkill, which is a medium rod, but not to slow it down. It just seems to load better with that little extra
weight.

Scott,
What oldtrout and spruce grouse said. The GPX lines are that tad heavier (1/2 a line weight or so) and I find they help on some rods....depends on your rod. The most recent acknowledgement of that was reinforced with a new 3wt Norling rod. Dave didn't like it with his line (it wasn't a GPX) and when I put a Sage QT 3 on it, it was lacking a bit. I put an SA WF3F (GPX) on her and both Nate and started to smile! It made a LOT of difference! A lot of difference. Jeremy. |

All this is good to hear. I picked up a couple of DT4 GPX lines at Blue Ribbon Flies sidewalk sale last September for about $10. a pop, and I wondered if
I'd erred as I fish either XPS or Trout tapers most of the time. Suspect they'll see some use this season. My wife likes a tad of overline on her
Hardy 4-weight, and these should be perfect.

My South Bend 290 is rated for a 6 weight but I felt this particular rod was slightly over-loaded with a 6.
Tried it with the GPX 5 and it was the ticket; however, I can't state unequivocally the GPX is gonna make you and your rod sing a duet! The GPX has a memory issue that I'm not fond of. Hope I'm not being too technical here?
Heck Eric, I'll up the ante to 12 bucks! BobbyG

I truly appreciate your generous offers for my DT4 GPX lines, and if I have any left over, I will be in touch immediately. FWIW, I am still kicking myself for
not having bought every one in the box.

Bob, please elaborate. |

Nothing to elaborate upon really. The line retains coil memory. Has to be stretched out. I don't like that about it.
I bought it for the sole purpose of fishing it with the 290. Bob Go Heels!!! |

I am far from the expert you fellows are but I use the GPX on several of my rods and have not had any memory problems. I did have a loop break at the joint I
just cut it off and put some Loon on it to seal the end.

Are the triangle taper lines a little bit heavier as well? I have a few rods that seem to load better with a TT than a standard WF of the same weight. |
