Paul Young Fly Rod??????? |
Lead | ||
|
Hi, I purchased a Rod from the estate of an elderly geltlman recently, and he indicated the Rod was a Paul Young he had purchased many years earlier. There
is no signature and nothing I found to indicate it is indeed a Rod made by Mr. Young. In the research I have started, I have found that many Rods made by Mr.
Young were not signed. Is there a means of identifying it as a Rod made by Paul Young?
Thanks, Bill |

Inconclusive at best. The rings made me think at first that yours is a spinning rod (see somewhat similar ring below, lower left, on a Paul H. Young spinning
rod), but another photo shows a stripping guide for a fly rod. The winding check does not entirely rule out the rod as a Young, but it is unusual.
The way that the cork flares out at the very end of your rod, to keep the dual rings in place, is typical of Young (as shown on the Young rod below), and at this point is the feature that to me looks most promising.
Can you supply some clear, overall photos of the rod, as well as more detailed photos? I suggest not trying to take extreme close-ups. Letting us see a few inches of clearly-focused rod is better than one inch that's blurry. Both of the Young rods I've shown are 7'2" models, quite close in overall length to your rod.

What are the node spacings? Looks like an airex spin rod, not the uslan made ones but the other 6 six sided ones, not sure who made them, I want to say Dunton.
sorry for the link if it's not appropriate please let me know http://cgi.ebay.com/Monta...ZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

OK, now I see what's up with the guides; it's a spinning rod. I hate to be negative, because over the years Young certainly made or marketed rods with
a variety of features and fittings, but in this case I just don't see any feature that conclusively points to Young.
The rod is relatively early. In 1950 Young marketed a 7'2" spinning rod model with a 13/64 ferrule and a 7/64 tiptop. The bamboo weight without fittings was 2.10 oz. and the average finished rod weight was 3.75 oz.
