Those older Orvis CFO's are hard to beat and they look good on cane.

Perhaps there is a finer reel out there than the old 3-inch, 3-screw Hardy St. George. If so, I can live with that.
Quashnet's Paul H. Young Rod Database has photos and descriptions of over
410 PHY Co. rods, plus catalogs, accessories, etc. Thank you to all
who continue to send me PHY rod photos and info.

Hardy Princess, older the better. But I sure like quashnet's St. George pic.

The Hardy 3 3/8' St. George is also an excellent reel, along with the 3" St. George, of course. Would note that as a click-pawl reel, it is hard to
beat the precision of a Richard Kell reel. They are superb but exist in very small numbers. Have only seen one for sale ever and that was several years ago.

There are many great ones, including those mentioned so far. Weighing price, durability, and style, the CFO is my favorite. I have not found a reel with a sweeter sound! |

3 inch St. George for me. But I am developing an appreciation for the Bougle` IV 3 1/4 inch.

Put me down for the CFO too, but I really like my J. Austin Forbes Thistle, not classic, but really nice none the less.

As far as an older reel that is no longer made, ...I don't think the sound gets better than these Heddon Imperial 125s
Maybe not the best reel ever, but in the running for the best sounding reel

The Hardy Lightweight series.
You can't go wrong with these. |

I agree with turtledoc, those Imperials just purr. My second choice is the Bougle MK IV, 3 1/4.

YES! on the Imperials - biggest bang for the buck around.

I agree on the Heddon Imperial 125 as one of the smoothest reels out there, can't beat the price. The CFO is also a good choice as well as Hardy Perfect
and St George.

Well I suggest the Meisselbach Catucci..
It has dual springs which can be set for LHW or RHW and adjusted by the owner for pay and play with just two screws. The pawl has three tips giving you long (if not eternal) life. It comes in five sizes which allows for lots of different uses. It's affordable. It sounds nice. And it is simply elegant with the black bakelite and the nickel silver fittings. Dennis

I think it's pretty hard to beat the vintage Hardy perfects and Bougles as the "finest" click reels ever made, with the modern Mark IV's and
the Bougle 1903 repro a close runner up. However, my favorite fishing reels are the traditional trout Peerless adjustable models. I don't feel it's
right to call them the "finest" because they generally have a little play in the spool and the feet on some models are a little thick. But since I
don't really care if I bang them up a bit, and they come used at a very attractive price, there is no other trout reel I'd rather fish with. I have the
entire set of them, including the 4A spey, and I just love 'em.

I can't really say which is "best" but it is awful hard to beat the Bougle Mk IV for beauty + functionality.
It is likewise hard to beat the Lightweight series for functionality + beauty. Also, I think the Princess has the sweetest sound of any reel when a big fish makes a run....
Gotta love the St. George. I'm not sure there's a finer match than a sweet 3wt and a Jr.
I also have a very soft spot for my Dingley 3" caged spool reel and my 3" Sharpes Scottie with red agate line guard. These reels are just completely off the charts with "cool factor."
