Who am I? | #543 | ||

Hi All:
I have been paddling around in the backwater eddy areas of this board for about a year now, and have done a couple of postings, so I guess it is time to introduce myself. I am a widower in my early 70's, with six grown sons, four daughters-in-law and eleven grandchildren, the oldest of whom just turned 12. Caught my first fish at the ripe old age of 4 1/2 on a worm in a farm pond in the Ozarks of Missouri, and have been hooked (the pun is intended!) ever since. I bought my first fly rod (Art Howald process fiberglass) in 1952, which I still have. (A real MONSTER!!) Ultimately graduated to graphite and have made all of my fly rods, as well as rods for my sons and their wives. I have always been interested in bamboo, but just never made the investment. ( I have recently acquired three different W&M Grangers.) A couple of years ago I decided that I was going to refurbish the two old bamboo fly rods that had belonged to my late father-in-law; Monty Mt. Tom's. During the past two years, I have refurbished about 18 vintage bamboo rods, which has been quite a learning experience. Doing all of this prompted me to embark on the road of making my own boo rod. Just need to finish my 4 string binder and I should be good to go. I live on the Texas Gulf Coast, 25 miles west of Houston, and fish primarily for sunfish and largemouth bass, though I have fished for trout from Maine to Oregon and California, and a myriad of places in between. I have tied my own flies for close to 30 years, and am in charge of the Houston fly club's Fly Tying courses. I retired from the electric utility industry in 1998, where I was involved both locally and nationally with utility industry environmental issues; especially those that related to power plant impacts on aquatic systems (impingement and entrainment). [I have advanced degrees in marine fisheries from Texas A&M. (This info and $2.00 should get me a cup of coffee in any restaurant in Houston.)] The wealth of information on this board is mind boggling! Frank

Well I have definately been looking at this site for a few years but haven't had the gumption to post much. I have been in the resort business over the
past 15 years and have lived in Vermont, Colorado (next to the Blue River), Wyoming (in the Grand Teton National Park and on the Snake River in Wilson), before
moving with my wife 7 years ago to Southwestern PA. Sure do miss the sun during these very grey months. Anyway, thought we were moving out of trout country
till I started hitting the local streams - and the steelhead in Erie! Never a dull moment in resorts...

I am recently laid off but severance gives me several months to fish and relax (I need it after the last round of 80 hour weeks and 1000 emails a day
craziness). Just moved back to Nashville to be near family and favorite warm and cold water fishing. From here it is a short drive to the mountains and
pocket water as well as some great tailwaters. I also love some of the small lakes for bass and bluegills .....but the bassmaster crowd looks at my funny
shaped brown rod and my deer hair bugs and think I am odd but I just
smile as they go by. BTW if you are an aspiring full dress salmon tyer like me. The
rejects are worth keeping next to your traditional bass flies.
In last few years: Florida (St Pete), MN (Minneapolis), TN (middle and east). I am a corporate buyer/ planner. I seem to end up tying a lot more than fishing. Need to work on proper balance for next job. |

I am a securities trader living in the Cincinnati, ohio area. I fish for trout in the Brookville, Indiana tailwater. Sometimes, I'll hit the little miami
river for bass. Discovered fly fishing on a trip to steamboat springs, Colorado. After one year of fishing graphite, got bit by the bamboo bug.
Now it's all I use except for saltwater. |

I am a structural engineer - live in Beaverton, Oregon and my office is in Portland. We design buildings. I have enjoyed my profession, but have told my
partners that December 31, 2009 will be the end of the trail. After that I hope to do a lot more of the fishing that I have been thinking of more and more for
the last few years. I made my first rod in about 1970 - a 7' fiberglass on a Fenwick blank. Still enjoy fishing with that rod, but lately the lure of
bamboo has been calling more and more. Plus, E-bay makes it real easy to add to the number of rods I hope to have time to fish with pretty soon.

David here - long time lurker. 38 years old living and working in northern NJ. Have a great wife and 2 kids (2 year old boy and 4 year old girl). I work as
an environmental lawyer. Have fly fished for about 20 years, but don't get out nearly enough (the wife/2 kid thing). Favorite waters are the West Branch
of the Delaware and the Housatonic.
I own only one old montague, which I rarely fish. I dream of learning how to build my own rod. I love the idea of building a few for myself and a few for kids. Someday I will get started. |

Well, I thought I'd responded to this thread a few years ago, but . . . just a senior moment. Currently living with my wife of 45 years in Austin, TX,
where we play a bit of golf, enjoy each other's company, and travel to see our three kids and eight grandkids. I retired from 40+ years in the educational
publishing and software business a couple of years ago, and my wife and I bought a cabin near my favorite river in the world, the Henry's Fork, thanks to
some good property sleuthing by Dennis (Firehole) Callaway, and we spend June through September there. I grew up fishing the Catskill rivers in NY in the 50s
and 60s and since then have cast a fly in most states (and a couple of overseas locations) with trout in them. I've been tying for about 35 years and have
been in and out of bamboo for about 40 years. I was blessed to have spent a few years in the 70s working for and writing for Field & Stream, which led to associations with the likes of Ed Zern, Ernie Schwiebert, Gary LaFontaine, Al McClane and a host
of others from whom I learned more about flyfishing in a few years than I would have stumbing about on my own for a few decades. The most important thing I
learned is that I am still learning. Thanks to an epiphany experienced last summer courtesy of pmd16, it is doubtful I will ever again use anything but a
bamboo rod to cast a fly to trout -- at least so long as I am not in a boat. :-)

I live in Central New York (Syracuse area) and am the business development director for an architectural and engineering firm. We specialize in full service
design of buildings for military, government, educational and commercial clients. I fish a number of the smaller waters of the Finger Lakes and Adirondacks. My
first bamboo rod was a 9' Horrocks Ibbotson, HI's Hightest that was my grandfathers. My new preference is a Tonkin Queen that works just fine for the
smaller waters that I fish on a regular basis. Just picked up a 7' W&M Granger Aristocrat at a local auction that I'm debating keeping or selling.
The way I stumble and bumble around I'm not sure that I'd be comfortable with it in hand.

I now live in Oklahoma City. I recently retired from the US Air Force as a jet engine mechanic. I started fly fishing and tying in 1989 when I was in
northern Maine. I then went to upstate New York and now I am hooked for life on fly fishing. I would like to start learning more about bamboo fly rods.
There a a few guys in the area that I know are collectors/fishers of bamboo. I hope nobody cares if I ask some questions now and then to fill in the grey
areas of my research.
