I have built most of my rods from blanks I have ordered so the prices shown are waaaaaaaaaay more than I have spent. I did pick up an old Winston with some
delamination issues for 8 bucks at a yard sale. I don't know what it is worth but restored I am sure that it is worth more than I paid for it.

Marc,
You're assuming your time is worth nothing? Hmm! Not $40/hr, $20, $5/hour? Not a good comparison. Pat |

Gee, thirty bucks for a culm, add in another another 150 bucks for hardware and shop materials don't even come close to $800? But honestly a new rod for
$1,200 bucks is a good deal given the work that goes into one.

I'm in the sub $1000.00 range so I fall into two ranges, although the bulk would be in the sub $800.00 category. But I'm finding fewer and fewer good
buys in the $400.00 area and prices keep rising. As long as I'm going to pay more I'll start looking at Orvis rods where I think better buys are to be
had.

I thought about this poll/thread today as I was thinking about many of the high-end production graphite rods approaching the $800.00 mark. The poll showed that
40% of the voters purchased cane rods $800.00 and under, 52% purchased rods $1,000.00 and under; and, 66% purchased rods $1,250.00. There are an awful lot of
rods in those price points, both new and vintage. I was wondering if there is any connection between the price of graphite and conversion to cane rods? Or, are
is cane conversion price independent? I know that this question is further complicated by the severe down town that is impacting both cane and graphite rod
sales.

$800.00 Graphite Rod!! | #29 | ||

Can anyone explain to me how a graphite rod can bring $800.00?
$150.00 rod, $230.00 marketing costs, $420.00 profit..........is that about right? bobbyg Go Heels!!! |

Some of it is just the psychology that a 800.00 rod must be just a bit better than myold 575.00 rod, so it's worth getting.

Not to mention that some some of the most expensive graphites are still made in the US of A, with decent wages & benefits paid. Not all plastic rods,
gents, are made in Asia.

I have several Graphites well over $800.00 and consider them well worth the $.
I have several fiberglass well over $800.00 and consider them well worth the $. I have numerous bamboos far in excess of $800.00 and also consider most of them well worth the $. Although some of the less expensive ones put some of the big buck ones to shame. All of the rods have a tremendous amount of R&D/maker experience/hand work and are just plumb beautiful and spectaculary useful tools. I don't think bamboo has the corner on class and useability. And I like cheap jug wine when I am in the field but sometimes a $75.00 bottle of wine is just the ticket.

I have four John Pickards....Price spent was $1300 average....Two I bought slightly used, two new directly from John.....I think John's acquisition of
Schaff's collection of Dickerson tools will help push his work to the next level both in terms of name recognition and price....

Bamboo about $350 on average.
Plastic $150 TFO Professional Series 4 piece 10 wt. I had the opportunity to cst many similar high dollar rods, and for me this was by far the best casting rod in that weight. Pete

David,
I would be very surprised if there was any connection between the rise in graphite prices and folks on this board switch to cane. I could be wrong but I would be very surprised!! CF |

I think the poll showed that most of us buy rods $800 and down, I would like to see it with different ranges too just to see where
I fit in. My last 3 rods were all Orvis rods but the average price was $650. I sure need to find out where CaneHead is shopping. He Quoted some sweet prices for some nice rods. Wish I would get that lucky. Jack |

This is one of those cases where you need a different measure of central tendency. If you were a shoe company, you would be less interested in the average
foot size of your customers than in how many pair you sold of each specific size. Same thing here. The measure you want is not the mean, but the mode. So
the question is: Do you tend to buy most of your rods at a certain price point? My answer is: Yes.
Oh.... between $1,200 - $1,400. richard |

I guess I have to speak up for the bottom feeders. I buy beat up old rods and fix them up. My favorites are the real old ones with odd ball hardware and wood
or calcutta cane shafts. For years I tried not to break the $100 barrier, but have broken the $200 barrier 3 times in the last 2 years, but have yet to crack
$300. Sometimes you get lucky and this fall I got an OK 8' Landman VLA special (delicate little thing) and a 10' A&I Empire City (T&E?) in
great shape (good wet fly/nymph rod).
One of my fishing buddies is a high end guy and fishes Paynes, Pezon et Michel, etc rods. I felt like the poor relation when one day I was fishing the Willowemoc in front of the Fly Museum with a South Bend 359 and a Medalist reel when an old guy came up to me and said I was fishing the dream outfit of his younger years. Back in the bamboo days all he could afford was a cheap Montague with a low end Russel reel and lusted after a Medalist. That put some perspective on the "good old days" for me. Go Wolfpack!
