I do realize there is a price for quality, but is there anything worth while replacing these reels where they once sat in the $ spectrum? As they say, you snooze you lose.

While jumping from web page to web page I just visited Mr. Godfrey's site to view the Westminster that I have been dreaming about for over a year. To my
dismay I do believe they are now priced out of my range...So what is left?

Dan, have a look at the Kineya reels.
also, do a Kineya search on this forum for lots of good information and personal reviews. I recently bought a new 701 at a used price. It is quite the reel in every way in my opinion Paul |

There are some very good reel makers on this very forum
I myself have always wanted a Maurice Noel salmon reel. When i first started conversing with Maurice they were a nice bargain at $900. They are now over $3K and i still want one
I'd go for a peerless, or maybe even look at the LOOP Classic. In short,, there are a ton of options these days, The Cascapedia is now down to working mans paycheck level . Hardy Guy

dan ,
the very very best dingley will cost you less then them high priced reels , imho , just as good or better them some of them , i have had my hands on alot of reels , and still for the best bang for the buck for what you get , go searching for a dingley perfect with round line guide or a red agate one , if you don't mind paying a bit but a heck of alot less then the handmade reels , you'll end up with a great reel ,

Thanks to all for the replies,
The Godfrey for me seemed to previously fit my need for a classically designed reel with an adjustable drag and hand made by a contemporary maker (within a reasonable price range). I'm not too keen on the Kineya's, but I do appreciate their craftsmanship...just not for me. By the same token I do not care for the Peerless as well because of the non adjustable drag. Dingleys are now a desire of mine and I will eventually own such a reel that Rich suggests, but it is not of the type that will fill the niche I am looking to fill. Jim's reel being up for sale soon would have been perfect if it was later into the spring ($ is tight right now). If it is still around in a couple ofmonths I would take a serious look,, just can't right now. I guess I am just trying to brainstorm while I save. A used Godfrey seems to be a good decision when the time comes. |

used is the way to go , better deal , money is tight everywhere , my wallet is very very thin these days , with all the dealings on reels i have made in the last couple months , i must have picked up 15 new reels for my collection , i wish i was on the river at this time of year more and not on this computor , seems all i do is search for another sweet deal , and away the money flows , it's alot of fun , i just picked up a couple new 3 inch dingley perfects with round line guides for my collection , it's a sickness for sure , but a good one you can always do some tradeing dan for a reel , now i'm not saying i'd trade one of my red agate dingley's , i just did a trade yesterday for my second godfrey reel , i let a great reel go with a bit of cash , but i got a mint godfrey reel coming , he's happy , i'm happy , what can be better then that , thats the great thing about tradeing , we each got something new to check out and with little cash , i'm sure you must have some stuff you don't use as most of us have way way to much , you never know what might bring you on a trade , you got any bamboo rods you'd trade at this time LOL

The Hardy Cascapedia 2/3/4 has the same capacity as the Godfrey 274W, a very good click-pawl with a wide adjustment, and the prices from
www.harrissportsmail.com are difficult to pass by - check the current thread.
Completely bypasses the benchmade goal - this is CNC, made in Korea.
the rods are never obsolete - the marketing is.

How about a Robichaud? | #10
|
Not sure if Bob S. still has his for sale, but that's a very nice reel for the money... Do I detect that you want a very specific look? If not, you might
also consider a CFO. Or one of the good reels from Hardy like the Marquis, JLH (disc or click), etc. Or what about a Bougle? The Kineyas are indeed very nice,
but you won't get an adjustable one until you are at a 6wt or better. Could obviously hold a smaller line, but the balance will be off. The Dingley is a
great recommendation. The only difficulty there is if you are LHW. Like a classic Hardy, that will be hard to find. Maybe you can narrow down your requirements
for the peanut gallery? Also, not that I can speak for Jim, but he might be willing to hold the reel for you upon request. I've had some very good dealings
with Jim and he is a good guy. Might be worth a shot. C

FlymanDan,
"By the same token I do not care for the Peerless as well because of the non adjustable drag." If your concern is about Peerless reels not having an adjustable drag you need to check again as they are. Jim |

Hey Dan,
if you want s-handle and lhw - go used - I have a few robi's, a hermann, a couple of nilsson's, an adams, winston classics, peerless, mohlins, all acquired at reasonable prices against the cost new (with the exception of the hermann, and the robi's which were the best buy in s-handled reels ever when first offered imho). just keep looking. |

Re: non-adjustable Peerless reels | #14
|
Might be a case of looking at early models. I believe only the Salmon models originally had adjustable drag and even some of them are no longer made. For
example, I have owned two No. 2s that did not have adjustable drag as well as the No. 1s that Rockthief mentions. Later, an adjustable drag, and quite
different from that used on the Salmon models, was added to the 1 1/2, 2, and 3, but not the 1. None of the raised pillar models ever came standard with
adjustable drag, though I suppose it wouldn't have been too hard for Bob to do a custom job. BTW, there were some custom colored Peerless reels if that
floats your boat. The most common was a gold frame and black sideplates. They come up every once in awhile. C

I can't claim to know much about Peerless reels...never had the opportunity to handle one.....
......but doesn't the "A" in the model refer to "Adjustable"? If I am recalling correctly, the 1A, 2A, etc are the ones with the adjustable drags.....or then again, I could just be dreaming.... Mark B |

Mark,
You are correct, the "A" in the model number refers to the reel being adjustable. The old Peerless models were non-adjustable, but the newer ones are. This includes the model 1, which has been available with an adjustable drag for a number of years. Jim |
