A horseshoe latch looks like a boomerang and is held with one screw. A telephone latch ...well, it sorta' looks like a telephone did back when we were
growing up and it is held with two screws. I'll find some pictures for you ...

Thanks Dean! Do you have to loosen one of the screws on the telephone latch to remove the spool?

no, it's spring loaded - here the spring on a Dingley
the rods are never obsolete - the marketing is.

I'm not the one who asked the question but sure do appreciate the clear, illustrated answer.
I had no clue what these were before these answers.
Thanks guys. Ken |

slw wrote: The side opposite the screw has a dimple on the underside that sits in a recess in the spool. That end of the latch is also bent down wards to keep the dimple in the hole ...which is why you so often see the arch/swing of the latch cut into the finish. That is from the dimple dragging across the face of the spool. Dean.

> What holds the horseshoe latch in place?
(besides riding in the spindle groove to hold it steady) it's attached to the spool on earliest reels by a screw, later on a rivit. There's also a little bump on the underside that clicks into a tiny depression on the spool to keep it "latched". Bob |

Ron-
Thanks for your photo of the Dingley. I always have wondered what purpose the spring had on the caged arbor. I'm still waiting on my telephone latch D to arrive to get a first hand glimpse. Great information! |
