For those of you lucky enough to have cast an original, or even a copy, of the Payne 100 taper, how would you describe the action? Slow, medium, fast. Is it a
true 4 wt?
Thanks for your opinions, Winston |

For me it is a tru 4wt, with a Wulff TT line, medium action ... but let's see what Rolf says; he has the best Payne 100 that I've ever known of.

Ken, I've had the opportunity to cast Rolfs Payne100 back to back with my Mike Brooks Payne 100 and he did also. Near as I could tell they were pretty much
identical
Mine is a true 4wt. I use a Rio DT4 Classic on it, likes it just fine. medium, perhaps just a hair slow of "medium". Bends down into the grip, but not weak. Talk to Mike Brooks about it (mvbrooks here).

Winston; My opinion is still being completed in Mike B's shop at this time but due to be shipped out anytime now. From all I've heard the taper is old
school classic in nature and right in line with Mer's description. A good close in rod with a bit of reserve to reach out with when needed.

I got to cast one of Mike Brooks Payne 100's. It was one of the few rods I've cast where right off the bat I thought "WOW!" One of the nicest
fly rods I've experienced...I was going to order one but things fell apart so to speak.

Thanks to everyone who answered my question.
I just made a copy of the 100 and while I found it to be a very nice feeling rod, it wasn't quite as fast as I wanted it tobe. Thanks again. |

To me ~~ there is no more pleasant casting rod than a Payne 100. I would agree with the "just a hair on the slow side of medium" description. I had
an A.J. Thramer Payne 100 ~~ and it is one of the few rods that I have sold that I wish I could get back.

Winston, if by "Fast" you mean a more tip-oriented action, then keep in mind that in general, Paynes weren't designed to be fast. Not that some
weren't, but your typical Dickerson taper is usually faster than your typical Payne.

I have a copy (maker's name witheld because he's stiffed a lot of people and I don't want to rile them) and, matched with a DT4, consider it to be
a near-perfect dry fly taper for small to medium trout in small to medium streams. If it's really windy or if there's a chance of having to chuck a
streamer of big stonefly, I'd leave it home.
The first time it was used was on NM's San Juan - several trout had it bent right to the cork, though it survived unbroken and un-set. |

I too have a Payne 100 copy from a maker that sold blanks on eBay several years ago (I wonder if it was the same maker mentioned in the previous post by
GrsdLnr!!!). Beautiful action that definitely flexed to the grip, but plenty of reserve power to get the line out there when you have to. True 4wt with the DT4
Sylk line. Unfortunately, I broke the only tip last summer! Any one know where I could get a replacement tip?
At any rate, I'm going to order a complete Payne 100 from Mike Brooks very soon. Ron. |

Go for a 100H taper. That should make the difference.

Payne Model 100. | #15 | ||

Winston.
Over the Last 40 years I have owned a dozen Payne model 100s. The 1930's were a lot different than the 1950-60's rods. Payne's beveller was a standard machine it was not a multiplyer beveller. The machine cut the taper that was on the steel Pattern. Heavy ment 1 line weight up. The only way to change the slope of the rod was to change the steel pattern. The faster 7'6" rod was the model 101. For a 4 wtg, cut a 101 L this will give you a fast 4 wtg. rod. Best Hal Bacon |

I have a copy I built last year. Elegant rod with a medium action that I would describe as true 4-weight. Very nice casting rod with a Sylk DT |

Having had the opportunity to cast originals, I would rate them in the order of the Payne 100, Dickerson's 7612 the Payne's 100H from medium to
medium/fast in action. I liked the Payne 100H with a DT4 though some may perfer it with a 5. Personally, I prefer the 7612 over the 100. Though after casting
the 100H from pandora's box, the taper is on the to do list!

I prefer the 100 over the 7612 (clone) The 100 feels more complex, versatile, in inventing ways to get you fly where you want it floating how you want it. The
Dickerson is more straight forward and direct. I don't know if this conveys the feel I have using the rods or not but it is why we pick one over the other
in the end. I think I like the 7613 5wt a bit more than the 7612. I'm in So Cal so my conditions may vary from yours quite a bit. Almost every afternoon
its windy, often real windy. The streams mostly are on steep grades. So factor that into my conclusions and preferences.
I like a swelled butt but like to feel the rod flex under my hand even more. That also is one of the best parts of the payne rod. With all this talk I think I'll take it with me today. . . Alan |

I cast a Mike Brooks Payne 100 and it was one of the top 5 rods I've ever cast. I'd like to get one for myself.
