Wading shoe question? |

Any of you tried the new Aqua Stealth rubber soles instead of felt? I'm thinking of replacing my wading boots and just trying to get some input on soles.

I use them everywhere except for those snotty rocks in the PNW steelhead rivers. They are much nicer to walk in and work perfectly in the spring creeks that I
fish.

I've been using the AquaStealth soles with studs for almost two years. They work great on all surfaces except highly polished rocks, where the studs just
skate across the rock. If the rock has any texture at all, the studs grip well, but you do have to be careful of the big, highly polished ones. Newer Simms
soles with different tread may work better, especially without the studs.

The new Simms Vibram soles are suppose to be better than AquaStealth.

Fished the last five years in Aquastealths with and with out studds. They are great in mud and snow, cobled stone and sandy bottoms. The studds give more grip
on cobbled to larger rounded rock and shale bottom streams. When you get to bowling ball size rocks and larger, especially with a slim coating on them there is
nothing like studded felts to give you the best possible purchase. Looking forward to 2009 now that I have two new pairs of Simms Guides, a pair of the vibram
sole for the low gradient streams, our MD eastern tailwaters and spring creeks, and a pair of the felt studded for the western tailwaters with there higher
gradient composed of slick covered rounded rocks. Of course your mileage may vary and I would be remissed if I didn't put in that a good wading stick will
go along to avoiding submergence!

Not quite as good as felt, but good enough. I have two pair of Aqua Stealth soled boots, one with studs and one without...use depending upon the stream bed.
I've always disliked having to deal with clogged up felts. A good point of the rubber soles is the ease of cleaning; especially important in regard to the
spread of stream pests such as whirling disease, rock snot, and the like.

They work great in the water. Very easy to hike and to wash no snow or mud

Anyone know if the new Vibram wading sole is available in a resoling kit as of yet? I have a good pair of Orvis boots that need new soles, but I don't want
felts this time. I know there are AquaStealth resole kits avaiable, but I really want to try the new Vibram soles. I guess they will eventually be available,
if I wait long enough. I just don't want to have to buy a new expensive pair of boots to get the Vibram soles.

I abandoned studded felts because they wore out so quickly walking down the railroad tracks, switched to Weinbrenner studded rubber soles (which were just OK),
and now I'm testing a pair of Patagonia Sticky Rubber soled boots (no studs), and I'm surprised at their stickiness. The Upper Sacramento River
isn't the toughest wading on the planet, but then again, I never thought I'd fish a wading boot without studs, yet I'm doing pretty well - even on
the slower snot-rock sections.
I don't miss that awful skating sensation studs provided on smooth, flat rock surfaces, and the grip on dry rock is nothing short of amazing. I can safely say the Patagonia wading boots would be awesome for hiking to and fishing smaller streams, where you're in and out of the water a lot. |

I bought my first pair in 96 and haven't regreted it once. Wear like iron, the first pair I wore for 8 years, I actually still have them and the soles are
still intact and usable.
