Just curious how other rodmakers test their rods BEFORE they go to the trouble of wrapping and varnishing, etc. There are many things I do, but one thing,
before I even ferrule a rod, is make sure the tips is going to handle anything a customer throws at it (we're talking NORMAL use, here, not beating the
goat out of the garden with the fly rod). Before I ferrule a tip, I do several things, but one of them that I consider very important is my "not so
scientific" stress test. I do this several times with each tip, along each flat, to make sure it's strong and tough enough to handle someone what
"overworks" a fish. After I get it ferruled and get a handle on it, I do the same thing with the entire rod. Now, nobody should ever bend a rod
this much under fishing conditions, although there are times when something like this might be necessary. When testing the tips, I bend them well past 180
degrees, then do the same, or very close to 180, with the ferruled rod before I finish it out. .

Bob,
I do several different tests. After straightening any bends and removing any twists, I bend the tips 90* and leave them bent for several minutes. Then shake the heck out of 'em. If they remain bent after a good shake then I messed up somewhere along the line. I'll hang most of the section off of my bench and twang it up and down, watching it oscillate till it stops. Ideally all sections will oscillate straight up and down on all flats. I also measure the entire rod rather carefully every few inches. Tips should be in a .001" tolerance from flat to flat. Butts should be within .002" - .003". When installing guides, I always use a static curve test. Sometimes it results in a strange looking guide placement, but I think it makes a big difference when casting and playing fish. And of course, after each rod is finished I cover the reel seat with tape (to prevent scratching) and slip on a reel. Each rod is cast in my lawn. I have to! Can't stand to let one go without casting it. You know how it is... I wouldn't want to leave any varnish residue in the guides! :-) Harry

I did that in Walmart one day with an Ugly Stick. Snapped it in 2. I felt like an idiot.

Bob, thanks for posting those pictures. Now I don't feel like a nut for doing pretty much the same thing(I'm still a nut but at least now there's
one less reason). It has saved me the frustration of finishing out a rod(twice) only to have it break on the first hookset.

i had a customer who would make the tip touch the butt of the rod or he would not buy it. i did not enjoy the experience! kudos to Bob for doing that himself!

AJ, TIP TO BUTT. Yep, I'd cringe a little, especially after all of that varnish and winding work! Not so bad if it fails at the glue up stage, but after
the rod is finished? I get a little picky about people bending my rods THAT much after 40 or 50 hours of work is in them!
Gregg, I didn't know Wayne used a computer program. I have to go to the shop today and I'll call him from there. I've been meaning to call him anyways for a couple of weeks. Bob |

Bob,, you got more guts than I do.. bless ya. And AJ,, I would never let that customer in my shop again. Rods, any rod is not made to bend to that extreme.
Just my thoughts.
