Is there a difference in tapers in the older 8'/5-6wt Jenkins 'Classic' models vs their present 8' models? How would they cast differently?
Thanks!

Boo - I believe the models labelled "Classic" are closer in finish to the older Charlie Jenkins orginals - tipped wraps, wood ferrule plug, a bit
differnet hardware.
The 5/6 GA 80 I believe is the slightly beefed up version of the standard 4/5 wt GA80. The 3 pc GA8- I own or a 4/5 I indeed fish with small flies at a ditance with a 4 and have used a DT-5 with it - so I have no doubt the 5/6 is what it says. |

Mine was an older GA80, and I thought it best with a DT5. I think there is just the one taper and we all find different lines we like best. You could contact
Steve and confirm that there is just one taper for the GA80 or if it changed over the years.

This one on the Summers website (rod 1379) says 5/6 by Jenkins:

Based on the serial number, I believe the rod on the Summers website may be the same one that I used to own but sold earlier this year. The rod is a very nice
rod that throws a 5dt or 6wf and could handle a wide range of sized flies (both drys, nymphs and small to medium streamers). It was in excellent lightly
fished condition when it left my hands and appears to be in the same condition now. It was a great rod but I never could find the right line to make the rod
really sing.
If anyone is interested I believe I still have additional high-resolution pics of the rod - send me a pm and I can email the pics. --Grinnel-- |

Howdy All,
I thought I would chime in on this topic. Everything posted here is for the most part correct. Availabilty of components, and being unable to find a new and adequate oxidizing solution, caused us to drop the Classic model from our line. I won't go into detail here. After a good bit of analysis and consideration of past and present rods, Dad and I decided on what we felt was the best represtentation of the Jenkins rod we offer now. This is a decison we made mutally. All of our rods have always been built using the same tapers, with tempering and the cosmectics being the only difference. As Creaky Cane stated, the GA806 was a beefed up version of our GA80, designed to be a 5/6 weight rod. All GA806 models were custom orders. We never offered this rod as a standard model as it didn't quite make the grade in our opinon. This isn't to say that these rods are in any way undesireable. In fact, it may add to their value over time. It is just a matter of pride in our joint effort to offer the finest fishing tools that meet our persoanal standards. Please aim any questions my way at rodmaker@sopis.net . My best to all. Keeep the lines tight. Best regards, Steve Jenkins |
