I am thinking of starting a collection of Hardy Bros. Bamboo Fly Rods.
What are our favorites? Phil |

I'll start: I vote for The Marvel; 7 1/2' - 3/2 for a 4 weight.

LeeB is right on, one of the great fly rods ever . . . and the runner up in my book is the CC DeFrance 7' and the 8'er. They made a lot of rod in the
last 135 years
and I only know a few. Alan |

Sorry to be boring, but: The Marvel, followed by the CC de France. In my experience -- which is very far from comprehensive, especially in the longer rods --
the Halford Knockabout deserves a place on the list.
Collecting Hardy rods -- excellent idea. Have fun. |

I've got an 8'6", 3/2,5/6wt that was restored by our own Mike Patterson that is a marvel... even though we can't figure it out. It has 11
guides and is smooth as silk. I've written Hardy about it several times with the serial number... and all I get back from the various sources is the date
of manufacture. This leads me to the conclusion that there may well be some interesting odd balls out there.

I have always liked the Phantom (8') and the CC de France in the short lengths (less than 8-9')

Has anyone owned the 7'-6" Hollolight it has always SOUNDED like it would be a great rod to fish.
Hardy also built a rod called the Rouge River, this is the name of one of my favorite rivers in OR. Is that what it's named after ? or is there a Rouge River in the UK ? Alan |

Hi Phil - If you are going to collect Hardy, I would certainly watch for one of their spey rods in good condition. These are the the true aristocrats of the
rodmaking world.

Admittedly not entirely objective I'd have to agree with the Phantom.

I do agree that I want to have a great Salmon / Spey rod for my trip to the Margaree in October. Phil |

Phil,
If you are a Leonard wright fan , then it might be interesting that he fished a 8.5 Phantom.. NB |

If memory serves we well I think I remember the Phantom being a fast rod?
But it's a very long time since I had hold of one.

I own 4 Hardy Rods; two Phantoms, a Neo Cane, and a Salmon Deluxe. They are all excellent rods. Though I would say
my favorite is the 6'10" Phantom Holokona built in 1961. It has a
very nice crisp action that is easy to cast and allows excellent loop control for pin-point accuracy. The Hardy Phantom
was designed by Jim Hardy, and during the 1960's the Phantom was the rod to own. IMO it is the nicest rod I've
ever cast.

It's a fair point you make, Steeldog, about the 6'10" Phantom, such a delightful tight ("crisp" is your word) short small water rod. It
is quite distinct from the relaxed action of the Marvel. I'm a Marvel guy, but Hardy did cover all the bases, did they not.

You're right levertonhatches, Hardy covered all of the bases. From what I hear the Marvel is another awsome Hardy rod; I believe it was Eisenhoer's
favorite.

The favorites from my stash are a 6'8" CC deFrance, a 7' Marvel and a 8'6" Perfection Featherweight. I also have a 7'6"
Palakona 6 wt from the 70's I think but it doesn't see much use. I bought a 9' Hollokona to try with nymphs in the spring but I can't seem to
get the hang of that rod. Somewhere along the line I picked up a Rouge River (light salmon rod) and a Salmon Deluxe, just in case I get invited salmon fishing
but alas, not yet. The older Hardy's with all those intermediates are beautiful to look at regardless of how they fish. Alan
