F.E. Thomas Special question/appraisal |
Lead | ||
|
I am fairly new to the bamboo thing and recently came upon this rod. It has a tag with it that says it is an F.E. Thomas Special Browntone. The butt cap has
F.E. Thomas Special, Bangor ME on top and FE 422 on the butt. After some research I found that F.E. Thomas usually has signature wraps on the rod above the
handle?...which are not on this rod. Is it possible they were removed? Any thoughts on this rod and any guesses at an appraisal would much appreciated.

I had a F.E. Thomas Dirigo which had no signature wraps and was original but the Browntone which your's is should have plus the rod appears to be
refinished and rewrapped in non-traditional FE. Thomas colors. What length is it? Are all the pieces the same length, straight and any repairs? Does it have a
hookkeeper, bag and tube? I'll post a pic of my 7'6 2/2 Browntone so you can see the difference shortly.

It is 8'6" and does have a hook keeper. The pieces are all straight. One tip is full length and one is 5.5" shorter than he other pieces.

Tube like mine with brass top? Bag w/tag? These items add value. If you can add some pics of these items it would help too. Hopefully, others will chime in.

IMHO the american twist guides tell us it has been rewrapped with replacement guides at some point in time.

It kinda looks like it has a tip repair wrap or it is a strange glare near the tip. It also looks like it could have a repair near the male ferrule on one of
the tip sections. But I agree, does not look like standard colors for this model.

i would agree that its been redone by a hobbiest. i would be happy to get this rod for a full restoration ,rebuilding or scarfing tip to return it to original
spec. Dennis www.stonerodco.com

It does have what appears to be the original tube w/brass cap and the original sock. I will post pictures of that stuff soon. Thanks for your responses

JohnC,
Thanks for the pics. Noting what problems the rod has I would estimate it's value at around $200+ or -. I believe a full restoration as mentioned by tapermaker would increase its value to where you could possibly recoup the money spent for the restoration should you sell it . Right now a fair amount of the value is in the tube, bag & tag. Hopefully, you would consider restoring this wonderful FE and fish it. Dennis I was looking thru some FE's I owned and noted a " Hunter " made by FE for a Boston company had red tipped black wraps but I can't see a Browntone having those wraps. |

Good for you. It's amazing what a good restorationist will be able to do with your rod.
