Thanks, Jerry! We thought that that the wraps on that rod were different and that some might get a kick out of 'em. Cute photo!

Alan,
Your rod pictured in the 12/21 post is very nice. I particularly like the grip style and reel seat with the hooded cap and ring. What is the maker of the cap and ring that you used? Thank you, Alan Nixon |

We had a discussion in my rodshop in march 2006 (Philipp Sicher, Herbert Kiser, Jaroslaw Vecko and me) how we can make the 13-strip construction hollow. And it was Philipp Sicher, having this great idea. Since 2006 i constructed more than 100 rods with this construction and i think it is a good way to make a hollowbuilt rod. Have a nice day and many greetings from switzerland Kurt Zumbrunn www.bamboorods.ch |

Nice job, Jason. I just finished a 2/2 "Midge" blank myself and now I'm waiting on components from REC. Like you, I opted for the all cork
reelseat. Did you weigh your rod? My blank weighed in at 1.3 oz. Not sure how much the reelseat, grip, trunc ferrules and guides will weigh. I noticed that
Young originals are usually listed at 1.75 oz. Most importantly, how does it cast?

Sorry for the crappy pics, but here's a rod I finished up recently for a customer in West Virginia, based on a Dickerson 8013 taper:

Joel Anderson wrote:This one weighs 2.2 oz. finished, I have no idea what the blank alone is. It feels almost too light to me, I'm used to more weight. Heck, half of my surf plugs weigh more than this thing! It is very accurate out to about 30'(with my casting anyways) and quite smooth. Overall I like it but I have to get used to the weight(or lack thereof). |

American made Madake rod | #298 | ||
![]() ![]() ![]()
I should call this one "The Friendship Rod" since so many contributed to the project. This rod is made to the Garrison 202E taper, which is a 7 foot 4 weight when made from Tonkin. This one is made from Japanese Madake cane. It was given to Bill Harms by Yukihiro Yoshida, and Bill generously shared some with me. Max Satoh gave me some idea what to expect from the material, and also worked out a converted taper for us, the idea being that we would also build a rod to his calculated dimensions which should remain a 4 weight. This one is a two or a three weight. I'll find out which when the wind stops blowing here, if it ever does. The rod is also significantly lighter in the hand than a tonkin 202E, and I'm expecting it to be a nice midge rod. The ferrules came from Bill Fink, and are Herters stamped ferrules, about half the weight of a super Z. The reel seat insert is American Holly, given to me a while back by board member Bob Nunn. I like the ivory like appearance of it. The bag is by Todd Talsma. The reel rings were cut from stainless tubing from an old friend from my working past. (retirement is great) Madake is a very nice material to work with, probably a bit easier than tonkin, and makes a beautiful looking rod. If you want to learm more, check out Yukihiro's site http://www.yoshida-rod.com/ As you can see from the cross section photo, there is a layer of very fine fibers, which I was careful to preserve. The Sun motif "engraved" on the butt cap is inspired by the flag of Japan. Thanks to all those who made this rod possible. |

Tom,
I am always impressed by how clean your reel seat rings look. I like a reel seat that doesn't overshadow the rest of the rod, but can still compliment it. I am also interested to know how the madake casts. Will you be bringing this up to the Catskills this year? Scott |

Hi Scott - The rod will definitely be on the rack at the Catskills this year. I did take it out and cast some lines with it today. It does seem to prefer a 2
weight, as I thought it might. A 202E made from tonkin is a pretty solid 4 weight. The taper feels right as is, and I would not change the slope if I were
doing it again.
